there's nothing wrong with wanting a carefully researched and selected
puppy. I would venture to guess that finding an Akita to the Japanese
standard, in rescue, would be a slim chance. While many dogs are in
rescue through absolutely no fault of their own, others are more
challenging placements. Combine that with a challenging breed, and
rescue doesn't sound like what this OP is looking for - he's looking
for a carefully bred puppy.

Too bad you didn't ask last week - this past weekend I met a
beautiful Japanese lines white female Akita at an agility trial.
The owner struck me as very knowledgeable, and so had probably
carefully researched her dog's lines.

(Heh - this Akita was afraid of men, but licked me all over the
face.)

Matt,
Are you casting asparagus at your own manliness?

It's a conundrum. I take in (or meet) dogs who "Don't like men,
but they like you." I'm not sure whether to take that as an
insult or a compliment.

You and DH. (And my grandfather was the same way.)

Dogs who don't like anybody but their family, dogs who don't like men, dogs
who don't like men wearing hats - they all end up either leaning into him
for attention or completely rolling over onto their backs to beg for a belly
rub.

I'm guessing you behave in a similar fashion to what he does. Talks to the
dog a little but mostly sits and lets the dog decide what's going to happen.

And then there's a matter of animal magnetism that some of us just don't
have. I swear I can do the same things he does and it just doesn't work as
well for me.

Compliment, definitely.
