Default Trouble with Canidae???

I have been feeding my Greyhounds Canidae dogfood off and on for 6
years. My dogs have done great on it, better than any other food I have
tried but recently I have been noticing inconsistancies and trouble with
the product. There have been color changes. Sometimes the kibble is dark
brown, next it is light tan. Right now it is medium brown with a few
redish nuggets. Also, it is sometimes real dry looking and other times
real oily looking and it sometimes smells different. I have returned a
couple of bags that smeled rancid. I have also noticed big changes in my
dog's coats. My dogs coat were always beautiful. People were always
commenting on how soft their coats were and the greyhound rescue group
have never seen dogs with such shiny, soft coats. But lately their coats
have been varying wildly from soft and shiney to dry, dull and shedding.
I always check the dates on the bags and they are always only a few
weeks to a month old, very fresh and the place I buy it from stores it
in a clean cool warehouse. Have anyone else who feeds Canidae noticed
these problems?

In my opinion, from your statements, this company has a HUGE issue with

One anecdote does not a trend make, which is why she was
doing the sensible thing and asking other people who feed
Canidae whether or not they're seeing similar issues.

I'd also contact the company and ask them what's up. There
may or may not be legitimate reasons for a change in
appearance, and I'd want an explanation for that. I
wouldn't automatically assume it's a "quality control"
problem.

Default Trouble with Canidae???

I did call Canidae a couple of weeks ago to ask if there has been any
problems or similar complaints. They said there hasn't. When I asked
about why the kibble of my most recent bag was so light colored and dry
looking, the girl said that it was because that batch of kibble had
soaked up the oils more completely than other batches. She said that
there was nothing wrong with it but that if it smelled rancid to take it
back. I have been using Canidar for almost 6 years and have never seen
it look or smell so different from bag to bag. I have also never seen
such a swing in both my dog's coat appearance. In just the last few
months it goes from shiney and soft to dull and shedding then back
again. My dogs have always loved Canidae but during this same time,
varying from bag to bag, my dogs will be wildly ethusiastic for it or
will smell and smell it and then reluctantly choke it down. As I said
before, I always check the dates and they are always only a week to a
month from date of manufacture and the place I buy it from stores it in
a clean, cool wharehouse and it is away from heat and sunlight on the
store shelf.
I went to a big dog show in Denver this weekend and I ran into the
lady who runs a big Petfood store who is the one who recommended Canidae
to me in the first place. I asked her about my concerns with Canidae and
she said she has been getting a lot of the same complaints. She said she
used to recommend it the most but because of all of the complaints she
is becoming concerned with it's quality control. Even though she still
sells it she no longer recommends it.

Default Trouble with Canidae???

lolajo,
I ended up switching from Canidae a few months ago. My dogs had done
great on it and suddenly things changed. The company said they hadn't
changed the formula/ingredients. My dogs are now eating a different
food and things are back to normal.
