Scaly enlarged nipples, hot spots, crusty itchy skin, and he was plagued with yeast infections. We were constantly at the vet for ear wash, antibiotics, and steroids for the itch. Nothing seemed to work and the vet couldn't give me a definitive answer as to what was causing the problem. The first thing was to change his food - and we finally settled on a whitefish/sweet potato blend that seemed to work. One day I was in the holistic pet store buying the food and got talking to the woman who owns the place. She said 'i'll be willing to bet that he has seasonal allergies and this has nothing to do with what you're feeding him.' At this point I was willing to try anything. She hooked me up with some holistic allergy relief pills. I hesitate to give you the website for fear of being labelled a troll - I assure you I'm not - i have no vested interest in this place and I'm sure there are other companies around who sell the same stuff that you could check out. www.naturespetherbs.com I also put him on low-dose Benadryl once a day (with the vet's approval.) I also don't let him swim in water I wouldn't swim in myself. His skin and coat have never been in better shape and he hasn't had an ear infection or skin outbreak in the 8 months I've been using this treatment. |

You need this information in order to go further with treatment. In fact the odds are very good that this will give you a definitive diagnosis. J. dvm |

Sounds to me like your dog might have psarcoptic mange.
I and my puppy were infected with this awful mange back in 1970. At the time, this was very unusual for a human to be infected by their pet, so we were written up in medical and vet journals and papers. We also were the guinea pigs for lots of so-called expert cures. Unfortunately, to no avail, Pancho was never cured and was eventually put to sleep. 20 years later I was relating my story to an old farmer in Texas and he told me 'the vets don't know nothing. All you have to do to cure mange is to put some used engine oil on the sores till they go away. I guarantee it'll cure it." I was in disbelief, but a neighbor friend of mine who had introduced me to the old guy informed me that sure enough his cocker had had it 15 years before and the old guy told him the same thing. The neighbor followed the old guy's advice and I was petting the 20 year old cocker as we spoke. Just thought I'd pass this on. Keoni. Quote:
