wrote in message oups.com... I just got an akita male and I would like to get a book on how to train the dog appropriatly. Also, I am having a hard time coming up with a good name. thanks Where did you get your puppy? If he came from a breeder, that person should be a good source of information on puppy care and early training. They can also help with a registered name for AKC but often you have to just wait for the right call name to hit you based on the puppy's behavior or looks or some special interest you have. A good book to get is "How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live with". M |

Michael,
Great suggestions for CHINESE names, but the Akita Inu is from the Akita Prefecture in JAPAN. Yes, they are fabulous dogs, IF they come from a reputable, careful, sensible breeder. Dog aggression is very powerful in these guys however, and PRA, and hip dysplasia and a wide assortment of other diseases. I hope the OP really knows what they are doing and attends MANY obedience classes. I had Akitas 20+ years ago, my kids sat on them regularly. As a 12 week old puppy, my female wanted to take on a full grown man who dared to make his son scream (in glee) on the playground and she was NOT going to let "that bad man" hurt that little boy. She regularly terrified mothers pushing screaming, overtired babies in their strollers home from the nearby park, because she HAD to pick up a rock or bone and growl around it to show it off to the baby to try and calm it. She was the greatest dog on the earth when it came to caring about children. Otherwise, she was a dominant, high-strung, excavate to Japan escape artist. Akitas need brain work-lots of it! To the OP, Contact a breed club, get active with your dog. Participate, learn, teach, keep that very intelligent mind occupied or he will find his own entertainment.................;-} "Michael A. Senility is stalking me. :-( Here are the male Japanese names. They are quite complicated. http://www.20000-names.com/male_japanese_names.htm Sad story: I arrived at the shelter one day, and went directly to an Akita I'd met the day before. He was beautiful, intelligent and a sweetheart. To my horror, he was suffering from bloat. The shelter has no money for such disasters; so, I held him close as he was PTS. I had never seen a bloat case before, but I had been studying the topic. The signs were unmistakable. And, of course, I immediately knew what would be done. It was a heart-breaking event, for me. Funny story: there was an Akita at the shelter one day. It was the first Akita I had ever encountered. I entered his run to say "Hello". The next thing I knew, there was a front paw on top of each of my shoulders. Just as I was about to breathe, he licked me right in the face--and broke the ice. :-) It was love at first sight! Michael,
My male was removed from the yard by parties unknown during a horrible winter cold snap, below zero temps. He had been out to play in the snow for a while to cool off before having to come back inside. Like all northern breeds, snow means FUN!! A week of searching, posters, call to vets, calls to dead animal pickup, newspaper ads, driving blocks and blocks and blocks calling his name......got a phone call one the 7th or 8th day, a lady says "I think I found your dog. I was at the bus stop (2 miles away) and this huge dog (an honest 120 lb. neutered male that weight pulled for "fun") came up to me and..", I interrupted her right then and finished, "put his paws on your shoulders, looked you straight in the eyes and licked your face, right? That's my boy!" It turns out he had been living under bushes in a yard across the street from an elementary school and played with the kids before and after school. He had lost 25 pounds and had infected eyes but never left the kids to find his way home. His name was Tozama...........what a great dog. "Michael A. Ball" wrote in message ...
