Thought I'd send out one more min pin color photo for you to look at,
this shows his coleration and markings across the back very well, as well as the much lighter "wings" (countershading?) on his shoulders. You can't quite see the dorsal line on the neck but you can between the shoulders. Ayat is I what I believe you said. Oh and his skin is darkening, it's always been black on his face, but his belly is darkening as well--it was pink, now it's grey. http://www.totaldobe.com/images/zipper/playviva5.jpg |

The light markings on shoulders look unnatural, too light but part of them has to be just light and not true pale hair. If he had this strong countershading, he would also show rather visible pale markings on face and on lower legs. This Shiba shows rather nice countershading. The shoulder stripe is there, along with all the other typical pale markings: http://www.kagetora.nl/images/shiba-shishi18jan06.jpg This Akita shows as strong countershading as possible: http://www.akita-zucht.ch/Zucht/sashi.gif but the shoulder stripe isn't visible in this photo. But he definitely has black hairs and that back actually has quite a bit of black in it, it just shades into the red. The light markings on shoulders look unnatural, too light but part of them has to be just light and not true pale hair. If he had this strong countershading, he would also show rather visible pale markings on face and on lower legs. No, it's true pale hair. Not white, but pale cream. And then no, I would not call it countershading then because he has NO visible pale markings on his face or lower legs. The only other place on his body where the hair is this pale is a "shawl" like effect on the sides of his neck, again interspersed with black hairs. His feet, legs, and head all have rich, rich red on them that is actually much darker than the underlying coat of the shoulder and neck. Here's one more showing his shoulder stripe: http://www.totaldobe.com/images/zipp...ldershade1.jpg One that shows the "shawl" of light hairs with black edge on his neck: http://www.totaldobe.com/images/zipper/playviva2.jpg Head/legs no countershading: http://www.totaldobe.com/images/zipper/playviva4.jpg http://www.totaldobe.com/images/zipper/playviva6.jpg http://www.totaldobe.com/images/zipper/playviva7.jpg This Shiba shows rather nice countershading. The shoulder stripe is there, along with all the other typical pale markings: http://www.kagetora.nl/images/shiba-shishi18jan06.jpg Yes, I see it, but the only resemblance is the shoulder stripe. When I got Zipper at 4.5 months, he was pretty bald on his chest/belly, but the hair coming in there is significantly darker than the hair on that shoudler stripe... |

That pale neck seems to be rather common, but I found nearly no hints of the "traditional" countershading. Pins have so short coat, perhaps that means that countershading pattern looks very different? Or perhaps this is just pale hair roots which can be seen on places where hair grows differently, not so tight lying on skin but kind of standing. Dogs with rather short coat, like Basenji, Boxer and Whippet can sometimes show very visible countershading. Is Whippet coat as short as Min Pin coat? Liisa |

Actually I'd say those are places where the hairs themselves are a bit longer, especially on the neck--but not really the shoulder. Dogs with rather short coat, like Basenji, Boxer and Whippet can sometimes show very visible countershading. Is Whippet coat as short as Min Pin coat? Yes. All of these are very short single coats. I do have an idea though--could this be an area of undercoat? It doesn't look like undercoat, it's not fuzzy. But I know that Dobermans sometimes have undercoat on the sides of their neck though they don't have it elsewhere. It's not a big deal, I'm just curious about this kind of stuff. |
