Default Aftercare for senior dog w/ multiple extractions?

Hi All...

My wife and I are adopting a senior (8 - 10 yo) toy poodle from a small
rescue group here in Phoenix. We'll be picking her up Saturday or Sunday.

The dog has just (on Tuesday) had 10 or 12 teeth extracted. I don't have
access to the vet that did the work and will be making an appt for the dog
to see a new vet of my own ASAP.

Until I can get some advice from a vet, can y'all give me any guidance
on how best to handle the dog?

Is there anything specific I should be doing to help the dog be more
comfortable? I figure I should soak her kibble to soften it, but is there
anything else I should be doing watching for?

I'll be talking w/ the vet about dealing w/ the dental issues long-term.

I grew up w/ dogs, but haven't shared my home w/ one in many years. I'm
looking forward to having a doggie again.

Any guidance will be *vastly* appreciated.

adTHANKSvance!

Our oldest just had some teeth extracted. We put him on soft food for a
month and administered antibiotics.

Good luck.

........how wonderful!

..........will you at least get copies of any bloodwork they did before
surgery? If the teeth were that bad there may be kidney issues. Otherwise
did they give the dog a clean bill of health? Get all the medical papers
you can.

Is there anything specific I should be doing to help the dog be more
comfortable? I figure I should soak her kibble to soften it, but is there

........Since it's a toy poodle, why not feed canned food? I'd offer small
frequent meals while her mouth is still sore. If your pup is on antibiotics
for any extended period of time she may get diarrhea. If you give
probiotics twice a day that will help repopulate the gut with good bacteria.

.......congratulations on your new dog!

I plan on finding my own vet first then getting the old one to send any
and all records to the new vet. With respect to general health, they did
some blood work before the dental work to make sure she could tolerate
the anesthesia, but other than that, I don't know what else they did.

We met the doggie (Sabrina) last week and she's a very polite little
girl. The only visible issue is that she has an *extremely* thin coat.

They said 'Brina was shaved when she was 1st taken in (she was found
stray and horribly matted) and it hasn't grown in very well at all.

The fosterer said she was coming w/ some thyroid meds w/ the thought
that it would help improve her coat (my wife is on thyroid meds and this
makes sense) but I don't know if they did any thyroid function tests.

Is there anything specific I should be doing to help the dog be more
comfortable? I figure I should soak her kibble to soften it, but is

As I said, it's been decades since I owned a dog, but I seem to recall
that a diet of soft (canned) food makes a dog more prone to dental
issues.

I'd offer
small frequent meals while her mouth is still sore. If your pup is on
antibiotics for any extended period of time she may get diarrhea. If

The fosterer didn't say anything about antiobiotics shrug

......congratulations on your new dog!

Thanks... I'm lookikng forward to her arrival. As long as the house
rabbits don't freak out I think she'll be a good match.

........oh dear, I hope they did tests before giving the dog thyroid meds.

..........not really, that's a myth.
