Most people just fed their dogs what they ate. People gave dogs the
table scraps from that night's dinner or left overs. When I was a kid,
we had a toy poodle that my mom only fed table scraps and an occational
can of Mighty Dog dogfood when we ate out. That poodle lived to be
twenty and died of old age. She never had any health problems except
mild catarcs.

kind of sounds like the toy poodle we had too. her main diet consisted of
pupperonies and table food (good stuff not scraps). she didn't eat
commerical dog food except when she was a puppy. she licked out all the ice
cream dishes, drank tea, milk and loved split pea ham soup and much more.
she was almost 16 when she died after living a very healthy life.
