I was online shopping and came across a website that sells vests for
service dogs. Anyone can buy them even if their dog is not a service dog. So that got me thinking, could someone buy one of them, stick it on their dog and take them everywhere? Or do real service dogs and the people who have them have to carry some sort of proof with them that the dog is really a service dog? If not, the possibilities are endless for people like me who wish they could take their dogs everywhere. |

Such laws probably vary. If not, the possibilities are endless for people like me who wish they could take their dogs everywhere. And then more laws would have to be drafted, more loopholes closed, and more dog laws enacted. I really hope you're kidding. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

Could you post the link to the site that sells these vests? I'd like to bring it up for discussion in my therapy dog group. Thanks, Margaret |

However, an awful lot of websites sell those things, and a search would turn one or three up pretty quickly. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

I made blaze orange cordura vests with reflective striping for my dogs to wear when I take them trail running. It makes them easy to spot, day or night. I also make them wear trail bells so that any wildlife in the vicinity have a chance to do a quick fade into the background before the dogs arrive on the scene. The vests also serve to inform anybody encountering the dogs that they are not stray, lost or feral, but are in fact out on the trail on purpose. Although I've had people ask me if they are service or SAR dogs because of the vests, I'd never attempt to use them to take the dogs anywhere they don't belong. I hope you don't do anything that stupid... If your poodles act up in public while masquerading as service dogs you're liable to give the legitimate service dogs a bad name. Kathleen |

While a small part of me could be tempted at times to take the dogs out with me more often by passing them off as service dogs, I have no intentions of actually doing it. My cousin is blind and has a service dog out of necessity so I understand how important they are for people who really do need them. |

I do (or did at one time) have dog vests from some pet store. They were blaze orange net but they were awkward and I either gave them away or have them stored deep in long term storage. This past fall, I tied ribbons of surveyors tape (neon pink & blaze orange) to their flat buckle jogging collars. Visible to hunter types AND quite festive. Chris and her smoothies, |

I bought a bunch of blaze vests from Mountain Ridge Outfitters and am mostly very happy with them, but the largest size they carry isn't big enough for Moby Emmett (60 lbs). I've seen that pet stores carry them and they're cheaper, too - what don't you like about the ones you tried? -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |
