hiya everyone,
i have a lurcher that has been diagnosed with hip dysplaicure. she is on pain relif and is ok. her food and water is down 24 hours a day and yet she is still looking underweight. her ribs are noticable and is her back bone. i dont know what is wrong as she has food and water whenever she wants. the only things that it could be is that we have 2 puppies that are very energetic and are always playing with her. it also could be her medication that she is on and finally it could be that we live on a large property with a 2 acre field and she spends alot of the time galloping about there. i have mentioned to my dad about this weight gaining food that we fed our springer spaniel as when we bought her she was very badly done. but the problem is that we are not fore having times when the food or water goes down and because we have puppies they cannot have this weight gaining food. please can anyone help as i am begining to think somethiong is seriously wrong internally. xx M.4.E

Since there are so many possibilities it makes sense to eliminate the bad ones by going to a vet first. If there's nothing medically wrong with her and exercise is the cause of her lower weight then you can increase her current daily intake of the same food to provide her with more nourishment. -- Tara |

, clicked their heels and said: i dont know what is wrong as she has food and water whenever she wants. This can be a problem as much as anything. Bite the bullet and offer her food 2x day for a limited time. Make her look forward to mealtime (no in between meal snacks until she's eating her food when presented). Wth 3 dogs in the house, free feeding is a very poor idea. Put them all on strict feeding schedules where everyone eats from their own bowl only, and when it's provided, and everyone will benefit. -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

If you have any suspicion there something wrong internally, take the dog to the vet first. It would be horrible to be messing around with her food and exercise while she gets sicker and sicker from something else. If the vet finds nothing wrong, ask about the recommended weight for your dog. Lurchers are going to look skinny even when they are at proper weight if they have the build of their greyhound ancestors. If you still need to worry about feeding the dog more after that, you can always feed the dog separately from the others. I would do this even if I weren't feeding weight gaining food. Sometimes one dog is not as aggressive as the others so the others get fat while he gets skinny when they are all feeding out of the same bowl. Just take the dog into another room in the morning and give it the weight gaining food or whatever you decide it should be eating. Even if the dog doesn't finish the bowl at that sitting, take the food up or shut the door to that room so none of the dogs have access to it. You need to be sure of what that dog is eating if you are seriously trying to ensure it gains weight. -- Paula "Anyway, other people are weird, but sometimes they have candy, so it's best to try to get along with them."
