Hi

We have a little toy dog, some kind of a miniature pincher mixture. Our vet
has us on a yearly schedule for shots and this time it is a Rabies Booster,
DHP+Parvo, Parvo and Corona. So I believe it is four shots. Two friends who
have senior dogs suggest that I not get these shots and that their dogs have
never been to the vet and perfectly healthy etc etc.

What's the verdict? The dog has had all the shots at its birth and up to 1
year old. Should continue with all these shots? Every year? Or is there some
drops or pills at the pet store that will replace all these shots?

Thanks for any comments

In most jurisdictions, you *have* to be current on rabies shots, so I do
keep my dog UTD on that. Since he came to me as an adult rescue and I
had no history of his vaccination records, he got his yearlies the first
couple of years. Last year, we did a titer instead, and I am planning
on repeating it yearly (there are plenty of "issues" associated with
doing this) instead of vaccinating. Keep in mind that the titers are
actually more expensive than the vaccines themselves. In the event that
his titers fall below acceptable levels, I will have him revaccinated,
and then titer him a couple of weeks later to check his response against
the challenge. This should give a more accurate picture of his immune
health anyway.

Read up on the issues as much as you can, and then decide what you want
to do. This is not a straightforward decision, and there are no right
or wrong answers.
