Default Dog Whisperer Book Recommendations?

Hi, I want to buy a dog training book or DVD for a friend. She owns some
sort of large terrier that could definitely benefit from some training. A
Google searcxh produced products by Cesar Millan and The Dog Whisperer book
by Paul Owens.
Which books/dvdsa are best? I'm impressed by Cesar Millan's show on cable
tv.

Thanks,

Mike

For people who ought to have been training their dog, but haven't for one
reason or another, I prefer most of Patricia McConnell's stuff. She is a
good teacher. She repeats and reinforces the information. She provides
examples. She wastes little to no time on complaining about other
trainers. She is practical and not dramatic. For people who have been
reluctant to train because they are afraid of being "firm" there is
"Parenting Your Dog" by Trish King.

When choosing a dog training book/dvd I think it is important to take into
account the person's temperament. Almost any training system can be
successsful in developing a polite pet, if applied consistently. The
problem is when the person is uncomfortable with the system presented they
don't apply it. And if they won't apply it, then it is useless. And when
I say that a person is "uncomfortable" with a system I don't necessarily
mean it is too harsh. There are many people who will not properly apply,
for example, clicker training. It doesn't feel right to them so they give
up before they have learned it. When there is a human trainer involved
there is a much greater chance that persuasion and demonstration will help
overcome modertate reluctance to accept a method. But even then at some
point there has to be "buy-in" from the person doing the actual training.

Pretty much even the wackiest books will work - even if often not for the
reasons the authors claim - as long as the training is provided regularly
and consistently. So look for something that you think will make your
friends interested in doing something good for their dog.
