Default Recommendation for a 'Diet' food for Overweight Border Collie

Sure you can. My 90 pound dog eats 2/3rd cups of Solid Gold WolfKing, twice
a day. I don't let the guidelines on the bag tell me how much to feed him,
but the condition of the dog. If your dog acts like he's starving, or you
feel bad about it, you can add bulk to their food the way Robin suggested,
by adding a little bit of vegetables to his food.

That said, if my calculations are right (Nutrience Medium is ME 3750
KCal/Kg, and 1 cup = 125 grams), the food is providing about 468 KCal/cup,
which is definitely on the high octane end of dog food. I don't know what
foods you have available to you, but I believe that there are other good dog
foods (Wellness, Solid Gold, Pinnacle, etc.) that are not so calorie dense.

The bag of what I'm feeding to my dogs suggests an amount that's about
twice what I'm actually feeding them.

They always do. That way they sell more! Kind of like why shampoo bottles
always say to lather, rinse then repeat.

We will check for fat later today and post the results.

However, I checked the guidlines on the kibble bag.
Assuming that we want him to weigh about 35 lbs the bag suggests about
the amount that we are feeding or even a bit more.

You can only use the kibble bag for a starting point. IME, they
almost always recommend too much food for the dogs that I have had.

One pet food store was recommending a kibble that is salmon based
(instead of chicken). They say that it does wonders for dogs. It is
also very expensive at about $55 (Canadian) for about 30 lbs or less.
The Nutrience is about $41 for 40 lbs.

I have fed one of my dogs a salmon based food for other reasons, but
her weight didn't change on it. That might be because I feed based on
how the dogs look instead of a set amount I think they should eat,
though. The salmon worked really well on my dog's allergy problem, no
more itchiness, and all the dogs loved the taste, but it was pretty
stinky. I ended up finding something else that worked. Even if the
salmon kibble works for the weight issue or other things you are
looking for, it probably isn't the only kibble that will meet your
needs. There's nothing wrong with looking further to find something
cheaper that works as well or better.

We did the tests that you suggested and Karl is definately not thin.
He liked the yogurt and licked it off the green beans (of course).

When he was at the farm with the trainer he was eating Precise
Foundation. I am at their WEB site but I can not find the calorie count.

Cut it down to 1/2 cup 2 times a
day, and add a 1/2 cup of canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie spice, just
plain pumpkin) or 1/2 cup of green beans, canned or frozen
Just to let everyone know that I have started to introduce the green
beans.
I cut each into quarter inch long pieces (otherwise he spits them out)
and mix in lots of yogurt.
Then I spread this over the top of his kibble.
He eats most of the beans and will be giving him larger portions each
day.
Thank you everyone.
