When my mother was growing up, adoption rules at humane
societies were considerably more lax than they are now and
she adopted an intact bitch who was never spayed. My mother
was away or something so my grandmother took the dog for a
walk, not realizing she was in heat, and was pretty quickly
mobbed by a horde of male dogs, who chased her into a phone
booth and from which she ended up calling the police. The
humane society borrowed the dog a few times while she was in
heat to walk her around Toronto and help them catch stray
males.
