Default Morphine for putting my dog to sleep?

My 13 year old Whippet Lacy fell down the stairs twice, a day apart
recently. She is not doing well. I have her on Prednisone which is
helping with the pain but she has stopped eating and she has lost some
bladder control. I know this is near the end for her most likely.

My last Whippet lived to 17 1/4 years old and when she woke one morning
in her own pee and screemed when I tried to get her up, I knew it was
time. I took her to the vet and putting her to sleep was terrible. She
didn't die right away like it was supposed to happen. Instead she
convulsed for several minutes until I begged my vet to give her another
shot.

I can't bear the idea of repeating this experience. My significant
other is a family doctor and he is willing to put her to sleep with
morphine when the time comes. Does anyone know if this is as humane for
dogs as it is for people?

I would instead call around and see if you can get a vet to come to the
house to put her to sleep. I'm sure if you call around someone offers it in
your area.
