I have an 8 month old Pit Named Roxy. She's still in her puppy phase
and gets a little out of hand sometimes. Today when I was playing with her she did this little puppy spazz out thing and did a faceplant right into a tempered glass coffee table. She didn't yelp, just kinda sat down and twisted her face up for a second, then started licking her tongue out. I checked her jaw and head and nothing was terribly wrong except she has a broken tooth in the very front. It was a little bloody and appeared to be cracked all the way up to the gumline. I was going to take her to the Emergency Vet Clinic, but I was told they can't do much for dental problems. Does anyone have any advice for me or at least some input to ease my mind? I am worried sick about her and can't take her to her normal DR. Till tomorrow. Thanks, Kate |

They can do amazing things with teeth nowadays. -- Toni http://www.cearbhaill.com/rules.htm |

I second this advice. Do this as soon as you can to prevent a deep infection from taking hold. It is amazing what they can do with canine dentistry. My Finn (RIP) had to have root canal on one of his lower canine teeth before he could have hip surgery. I always wished I'd had them put a gold cap on the tooth. Ok, not really, but I do LOVE the image :-) Tara |

To ease your mind in the meantime, dogs get cracked teeth all the time and can recover well even if the tooth has to be removed. One of my dogs came from the shelter with a cracked canine that had apparently been that way for a long time that nobody even noticed until I took her in to my vet for an all over check and he saw it. She eats fine and shows no signs of pain. The bigger problem is that if it is cracked to the gumline, it could be a way for infection to get in which would be a much bigger health concern. So make sure you take her in to the vet tomorrow, but don't stay up all night worrying, either. She'll need to be looked at but the vet or vet dentist should be able to fix the problem without too much trouble and good long term prognosis. -- Paula "Anyway, other people are weird, but sometimes they have candy, so it's best to try to get along with them." Thanks, Kate One of my dogs cracked several teeth (slab fractures) and we simply had our vet pull them, rather than risk them becoming inflammed/infected. She never had any problems with her bite and was able to eat normally. Flip |

Thanks, Kate I had a puppy that broke her canine off by opening her crate door - tooth got stuck in the latch, snapped right off close to the gum line - that was the last time we thought it was "cute" for her to try to open her door. It was a puppy tooth, so the vet decided to do nothing. She spent the night with her head on an ice pack, no other problems, it came out just as a normal puppy tooth would and her adult tooth grew in fine. Sue and Atty |

I took her to her regular vet today and they scheduled an extraction
for tomorrow bright and early, till then they gave me some pills for her pain. I think everything is going to work out just fine, except the dent in my wallet, but it's ok, shes part of the family! Thanks everyone for your advice! Kate |
