The first time I went to Los Angeles as an adult I was
really amazed by the beautiful older cars driving by while I
was waiting for the hotel shuttle. It's amazing.

I thought the place smelled like rotten eggs from the pollution.
Never went back since.

When I lived in Berkeley I took my truck to one of those oil
change places for its state inspection and the guy working
there told me that he could get to it more quickly for a
little extra money if I didn't need a receipt. I gave it a
pass, but being basically a rube I didn't realize until
quite a bit later that he was asking for a bribe and that if
I had doubts about my truck's ability to pass emissions
inspection, he'd take care of that for me. Here in NY
apparently the computers now used for inspection are online
to Albany and they dump the data in real time, so there are
fewer opportunities for that sort of thing.
