Hi everyone,
I posted to alt.med.veterinary too, but figured I may hit some different folks here. Franklin had a small (pea sized) tumor on the skin of his throat. It was removed yesterday, along with wide margins. I'm going to type the 2 biopsy reports here. One was from a FNA, the other from a "wedge" of the tumor we took a bit over a week ago. Earlier this year he had a benign fibroma removed from next to his eye, on the same side of the body as this tumor. He has also had a lipoma removed from the opposite side of his body, on his side, a few years ago. If anyone has any insight into these findings, it's appreciated. We expect "final" biopsy results on Thursday or Friday, and hold our breath until then. The vet said things looked good when he cut, with no "ugly" tissue, so that's pretty good so far. Thanks in advance for any information or constructive opinions. Report #1 - Cytology Microscopic Description: 2 smears from skin mass. Cellularity is low to moedrate consisting of neutrophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages admixed with a population of spindle cells and lysed cells. The spindle cells have a moderate amount of basophilic cytoplasm. The nuclei are round with small nucleoli. Microscopic Findings: Mild Mixed inflammation with a spindle cell proliferation. Comment: A mild inflammatory process is present with no etologic agents seen. The spindle cells are a concern, although they exhibit mild to moderate atypia an associated spindle cell tumor cannot be excluded. Tissue biopsy is recommended on this mass especially if clinically the mass appears infiltrative. ************************************************** ** Report #2 - Biopsy Microscopic Description: This specimen represents skin with a raised diffuse area of mixed chronic inflammation expanding the dermis. Lymphocytes, plasma cells, neutrophils and macrophages are identified. The epithelium of several follicles and the epidermis is invaded by small lymphocytes in some fields. Mitotic activity is not seen. Microscopic Findings: PROLIFERATIVE DERMATITIS WITH ATYPICAL LYMPHOID INFILTRATES, SKIN OF VENTRAL NECK Comment: Overall morphology is consistent with a chronic inflammatory process, however if other similar lesions develop, the possibility of epiltheliotropic lymphosarcoma should be considered as a differential. Follow-up evaluations are advised. We would appreciate knowing the outcome of this interesting case. ************************************************** *** -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

I have heard anecdotally that Flat Coats are predisposed to several types of cancer- is this something that worries you? Has the breed club done any sort of studies- maybe they have a specialist on retainer who is familiar with these things? Good luck with Franklin's findings- will be interested to hear what their final conclusion is. -- Toni http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com |

OMG yes! No lump goes uninvestigated. I had a FCR "wannabe" - she was a found dog who fit the bill for an FCR, but we'd never know. She had maligant mast cell cancer at the approximate age of 5. Has the breed club done any sort of studies- maybe they have a specialist on retainer who is familiar with these things? Several studies are going on and we've given blood to everybody who has asked. Good luck with Franklin's findings- will be interested to hear what their final conclusion is. Thanks - me too. This has been incredibly frustrating and the tumor was too small for the FCR studies (good and bad - I caught whatever fast, but not enough tissue for the studies). -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

What does your vet say? -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. I haven't brought him to see a vet yet. I probably will tomorrow. He's been peeing a little here and there. And my daughter saw him peeing a little when he's belly up. How weird! Sent via http://Pets-99.com , http://AnimalForum.ws & http://AnimalBlog.org |
