I have an adult male rottie that I would like to breed.
I am interested in breeding him mostly because of his incredible temperment. He is AKC certified and UTD on all shots. He has solid hips and no healt probs. or heredity problems. If anyone has an AKC female and is interested please reply here of by e-mail at . I would like to keep it local. Thanks! |

What else has he been tested for? How old is he? How closely does he conform to the breed standard? If anyone has an AKC female and is interested please reply here of by e-mail at . I would like to keep it local. and of course, you give no location! What other requirements do you have for the bitch except that she's AKC registered? Her OFA report? Other health testing proof? Temperament evaluation? Breed ring success? Conforms to breed standard? So many more reasons not to breed than to breed. Maybe going back to the same breeder where you got your pup would be a good way to get a new pup with a terrific temperament too. -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

I think it is terrific that you love your dog. Are you opened minded enough to consider you might have more to learn? You say your dog has no "heredity" problems. Which is teriffic. But it leaves me curious about how, exactly, you determined this. None of the words you used in your post suggested familiarity with the genetic health problems in the breed. So what genetic health issues are common to the breed, and how to did determine that you dog is clear for them? I don't think you would deliberately ignore doing what it takes to breed for healthy puppies, but I do think it is likely you don't yet know what you need to do. Breeding for good temperament is important. But so is the whole package. Personally I'm just tired of how many good nice Rottweilers are killed due to lack of homes. I think most of the breeders that created them had good intentions, but the dogs still die. It takes a lot of commitment to breed and keep the puppies alive and healthy into old age. Are you prepared to accept that out of the litter of 10 to 12 puppies that about half will die before they are two? Because that is what statistics say will happen. It doesn't happen with every litter, but it does happen with most large breed litters where the breeder (that would be you) is unprepared for what it takes to breed healthy puppies and place them in permanent homes. You aren't exactly born knowing what it will take to keep those puppies alive. It takes becoming involved in the breed, in rescue, in understanding WHY this happens, and understanding canine genetics. I am sorry if I am being vague. I did not want to give out too much
information, mostly looking to see if anyone in the area was interested. I did not give a location because I thought this was a local group. Thank you for the information and advice. Sorry, I'm clueless about why fully describing what you dog has to offer to the breed would be a bad thing. What harm were your risking if you had given more information? Bitch owners pretty much have their pick of good studs, so it would be pretty unusual for one to see good things in so little information. mostly looking to see if anyone in the area was interested.
