their heels and said: Janet B? Still there! Im really sorry for the time Im getting...anyway, thanks for the help. God bless you and help me pray for my dog that she'll be still alive tomorrow so i can bring her to the vet..please! in the power of prayer I trust...help me please... I wish you both the best. Let's hope she makes it overnight and you see the vet as early as possible. Raising abanadoned puppies is not a simple thing to do. Jay, I don't want to get your hopes up too high, but to get your puppy through until tomorrow, possibly the most important thing you can do is try to prevent or improve dehydration. If she is not eating at all, try giving her Pedialyte or Gatorade instead of water. I have two five-week-old puppies I am hand raising, and one has diarrhea. I don't think he's as sick as yours, but I also just wormed him on the vet's advice, and today he didn't want to eat. I made some boiled white rice and mixed in a little cottage cheese, checked the temperature to see that it was warm, not hot or cold, and he ate it willingly. I also found this site, http://www.leerburg.com/pup-med.htm which covers a lot of things including how to get a little food and liquid into a reluctant puppy. I haven't tried the techniques, so use at your own risk. If you can't get food or drink into her mouth, perhaps your vet student friend can get the equipment and solution to give her subcutaneous fluids, and explain how to do it. I don't know if that would be considered ethical or not, but it is not really difficult to do, and can be a lifesaver. Are you feeding this puppy kibble, or milk replacer, or what? Amy DAhl |

Jay, I hope you are checking this. I have somewhere I have
to go, and I don't know if you're still on line or if your puppy is still alive. Let me repeat that the most important thing is to keep your puppy hydrated. I have seen mighty miserable-looking puppies and dogs improve "miraculously" when given fluids. I have kept a very, very sick puppy alive that way for three weeks while we struggled to find what was wrong with her. A vet said to me once, "people can survive cholera if they can stay hydrated." Dehydration is a killer, and is often the reason a dog looks miserable and weak. The reason for the cottage cheese and rice is that it is very easy on the dog's digestion. Boiled white rice is considered 100% digestible, and the protein in cottage cheese is one of the easiest for dogs to handle. I used Esbilac formula on my puppies, and it contains the same protein as cottage cheese (casein). It also has a much higher water content than dry feed, of course, and probably a more appealing smell. I am lucky, so far, with my puppy in that he is well enough that the warm, moist cottage cheese and rice mixture appealed to him when the dry kibble did not. I hope you get this, and that your puppy pulls though. Amy Dahl |

That's true .. but there was no way in the world that a newsgroup could help this dog except by offering moral support to the owner. And sympathies. I hope the puppy is ok. |

But yelling at the owner to do something that s/he has already said is impossible, which is what Dreamspinner did, is just plain unhelpful. You're right, it was mean. I apologize to the original poster, I didn't know that you are in a part of the world where emergency vets are not available. It is just so frustrating to see posts like this come up time & time because the majority of them are posted by people who could very easily get their dog to a vet or an emergency vet but simply don't. I shouldn't assume that each post like this fits those circumstances. Again, I apologize. I hope you're puppy will be okay. Maybe you could find a human doctor who could give your puppy fluids under the skin to help keep it hydrated until you can get to a vet? I know that is a long shot, but maybe? |
