Default Puppy Food

I have a mix breed puppy. She weighs a little over 1.5lbs. I am
currently feeding her Royal Canin Mini Puppy 33 Formula. I bought this
on the suggestion of Banfield. Buy my neighbors are saying I should
have gotten "natural" food for her. They said it's better quality and
better over all for the dog since it's not chemically altered. And
they told me that it makes the dog smell different and their poop isn't
as squishy or stiny.
My one neighbor suggested "Merit" brand and someone else suggested
"Nutro?". Does anyone have any suggestions or information on either?

I have fed Royal Canin and had no problems with it. If you are having
problems with poop or smell, you might want to try new foods, but I
wouldn't go messing around with it just because your neighbors like
different foods. I ended up not feeding Royal Canin in the end
because of a dog with food allergies and there are only a couple of
options one of my dogs can eat without problems. She actually liked
the taste of the RC better, but them's the breaks. She did fine as
far as smell and poop and health on the RC and I haven't heard
anything bad about it as a dog food.

I would find it *highly* unusual for any two people to agree on what dogfood
is best. It is a hot topic for many, many people- almost like religion.

The best food is food that your dog does well on. Royal Canin is usually
regarded as a pretty decent food, so if your puppy is fine don't worry about
it.

Apparently WDJ ran an article recommending switching every
once in awhile, claiming that it reduces susceptibility to
allergies. I haven't read the article and I don't know
anything about the research behind it but I do switch dog
foods a few times a year. Partly it's because they're
working dogs and their nutritional requirements are not the
same during the off-season as they are during the winter,
but also because I've found that there really is not one
single best food (which is not, of course, to say that all
foods are equally good).

It's also been my experience a long time ago to think that a
dog is doing really well on a particular food, switch to
something else, and find that the dog immediately perks up
and starts looking better. Fortunately those days are
behind us (I hope!). I think that most people can't tell
how their dogs are really doing until they try something
else.
