Default bananas

My dogs, like most, love bananas. I can't eat them. DH does though.
I came home today to find a banana peel on the floor. DH also has a
tendency to leave these places he shouldn't. So I throw it out,
planning on telling DH to please make sure he puts them in the trash
from now on.

I walk upstairs to the kitchen and find the banana holder on the floor
and empty, Rut-roh! I call DH and ask him how many there were. 4 or
5. Which means 3-4 peels consumed, but I don't know how many by which
dogs (Franklin is the likely consumer of all, but Lucy may be an
accomplice).

I've googled, and think that this shouldn't be awful and they will
pass ok, but does anyone have any other thoughts on the possibilities
of diarrhea (didn't we just get over this!?!?) or vomiting? I hate
to induce vomiting unnecessarily.

Franklin isn't a counter cruiser and Lucy hasn't in a very, very long
time. The thing DOES tip over sometimes, and since it wasn't far
back, could have fallen to the floor, but I've never had them eat
peels before. ACK!

Boy, that sounds like something a certain Boxer, who shall remain
nameless but it starts with an H and rhymes with oubliette, would do.

Bananas are a binder, so even if the peels are an, um, loosener,
diarrhea shouldn't be a problem. I don't know about 3-4 whole
bananas plus skins, if one dog was the sole consumer, but Harriet
has eaten a whole banana plus skin with no ill results. If you
could be reasonably certain they split them fairly, I wouldn't
worry. Since you can't, I'd call the vet and ask, because it
*could* be that one dog ate the whole banana stash and it's better
to be safe than sorry.

Good luck! I hope the diarrhea does not return!

and there we have my main worry, since Franklin is known for
swallowing cloth and Lucy for bolting food. We have to wait and see,
but maybe some pumpkin with dinner would be a good idea to keep things
moving.

I'm thinking that constipation is a more likely outcome than diarrhea -
there is a lot of fiber in them fruits. My concern would be if they got
swallowed instead of chewed, and how likely that would be to cause an
obstruction of some sort, since dogs don't really digest plant material
well.

Before I had my garbage problems fixed, I stupidly threw about 3 or 4
overripe bananas in the garbage, which Queenie overturned and ate. I
believe she ate them entire, but I can't remember now. I waited for
problems but none occurred. So I hope the same for you!

They are said to be binding rather than the reverse...

And then there's my gang, who collectively had the hershey squirts after
being given peeled sliced banana as their fruit/veggie with their
evening meal. The three of them - 2 BCs (1/2 cousins and sharing, I
think about 1/16th of their DNA) and a JRT (unrelated, unless you go
waaaay back) - split 2 medium ripe bananas in a ratio roughly
proportional to their respective body weights. The result was the same
for all three dogs. They like bananas but bananas don't like them...

Not for some people :-(

Back to the dogs, no signs of ill effects thank goodness. Everything
is normal, although they did get pumpkin last night too. They get
banana otherwise (peeled!) and they handle it fine, but I was worried
about the peels.
