Bad veterinary advice kills dogs, you irresponsible,
under-educated moron. This particular piece of advice is
unlikely to kill a dog but it's unlikely to improve the lot
of a dog that's anxious. I'm increasingly convinced that
the reason your advice is so consistently awful is that you
deliberately post stuff that's wrong to get attention.

To the original poster: A few years ago I had a dog
suffering from cognitive dysfunction. We put her on
Anipryl, which helped quite a bit. It loses its
effectiveness over time (a year or so is my understanding)
but it helped my elderly dog live a lot more comfortably
during the time she was on it. Ask your vet about it. It's
not an opiate.

19 1/2 is amazing.

Don't worry about me. I know all about Mirelle and
her posts.

I'll ask Bernie's vet & take his advice. He has known
Bernie all his life. He came to us at 15 after his owner
died and had 2 good years after he adjusted to the change,
which was touch-and-go for the first few weeks.

He's had a number of ailments this last 2 years, including
nystagmus and later, an exciting bout of explosive diarrhea.
A recent physical pronounced him quite fit, although we had
suspected diabetes.

My old friend Bernie, collie mix, 19 1/2, still healthy
for a dog his age, suffers severe anxiety at night.

The vet is reluctant to put him on anything stronger, although
that is an option. Anyone have experiences or suggestions?

Ever tried PRAISING the dog to reassure him?

No, not at all. The thought never occurred to me. Usually,
we just kick him up the bottom and that seems to do the
trick. He's quite deaf, you see. Have we been wrong all
these years??

Question for group: Is it worth scanning through this
guy's posts for useful information, or is he simply a
common-or-garden net loon?
