Do you think that certain types of dogs tend to require a greater
financial commitment that others in terms of food, housing, veterinary
care and so on? Are there particular breeds that you feel require far less
or far more financial resources in order to properly care for them.

I'm not asking in terms of the price one might pay to a breeder in order
to purchase the dog. I'm asking in terms of the financial means required
to properly care for the animal.

I would not want to bring an animal into my home that I would be unable to
properly provide for.

Activity level can come into play also. If you have a dog in
competition or field sports the chance of injuries are there.

That's a good point, though mitigated somewhat in that such a
dog is not generally a "weekend warrior" couch potato dog, asked
to sporadically perform above his fitness and training level.
I'm not saying that the OP's dog fits this mold, just that I see
plenty who do.

Because they're active every day of their lives, my dogs, and
yours probably, don't encounter too many activity-related
injuries.

Heh! I just realised that *keeping* them active is my biggest
expense!

there, staying somewhere andit seems they eat a little more. My guys are
running around the property during the week then on Sundays it's out to
the fields to do the hard running.

I do my best to mitigate the expense. I judge in agility, and
that often comes with a free entry (which I split between both
dogs or take Friday if I have to fly to the trial) and some
expenses.

On a club level, I also help with fundraising which helps the
group as a whole.

I love the weekends when it's only me and my dogs. While the
weather holds, it'll be swimming for them this weekend.
