I just brought home an 8 week old am staf pup to my house, she was the
first one to leave the litter and she made in the crate while she was there. I got her home tonight and fed her i took her out about 30 min after the feeding and nothing, then another 30 min later, and she peed and i praise dher, But it seems like she has no idea why we are walking outside and since she recieved her first shot this is the first time she's outdoors and is so curious about everything around she won't eliminate, please help me with some advice on what to do, while she is not on the leash outside i have her in a crate small enough for her not to be able to eliminate in it without laying in it. thanks |

One - Is this your first dog? Two - How much time are you spending with her when you take her out. It sounds like you have good start but a little more information would be helpful. You are correct in observing that she has no idea why you are walking outside, she doesn't yet. It's up to you to teach her why. Taking her out after feeding is good but if nothing after 15 minutes or so go back in and try again like you are doing. A puppy shouldn't go for more than two hours at the most without being taken out to go. You can increase this time as she gets older and learns to control herself but for now frequent trips outside, lot's and lot's of praise when she goes (throw a party), and watch her like a hawk in the house when she isn't crated. If you catch her about to go in the house or she just went, don't make a big deal about it but quickly pick her up and take her outside so she learns that this is the acceptable place to go. Clean any accidents in the house thourghly and use a good product (can't think of one of the top of my head)to get rid of any scent or odors or she will go in that spot again. There are lot's of other tips you can pick up and I won't go through them all. Matt (posts as Rocky) gives really solid advice on housebreaking so read through some of his previous posts. Tara posted a link to a good site with lot's of good housebreaking information in a different thread so I went and found it for you. http://www.inch.com/~dogs/housebreaking.html Best of luck, keep up the good work and you'll get her there. -- Les Hilliard & Nikki the Super Shih-Tzu |

I have a feeling my dog is really smart, she is learning very quickly, since bringing her home last night she has had only one accident in the house all other times goes as follows.... She is in her crate and starts crying, during the night this was about once every two hours almost on the dot! when she does that i go directly to her crate take her out, put her leaaash on while in my arms, take her outside also in my arms and she pees almost immidietly, i praise her for peeing and bring her directly back to her crate. my concern is that i dont want her to think that everytime she cries i will take her out of the crate, this is why i take her directly outside for a pee and right back in without any play. Now keep in mind i've only had her for about 18 hours now but she does cry for anywhere form 5-15 minutes when put in the crate... when should i expect this to stop? or should i say when should i get concerned when the crying doesnt end, and when shuold i expect her to go into her crate volentarily? also i am documenting the time she eats/crinks and the time she eliminates so i can see the pattern, but her pooping has been incinsistant, can i attribute this to the change in environment and give her a few days to settle in, b/c she is curious about EVERYTHING! thanks for the help and any more advice i am open to Cory |

The trick to this is trying to set your alarm so that you wake up and take her out minutes before she cries. Is the crate near your bed? Is it covered or open? Are you feeding her in the crate? These are all considerations, but basically, as you have said, you just brought her home and it takes more than a day or two to get everything figured out. It sounds like you're on the right path. And it is really easy to forget how all this stuff works, but you'll remember more with each day! thanks for the help, i guess you're right, i just brought her home and everything is new, so i should settled down, do what i'm doing and give it a few days. one thing i did notice is she shakes while she sleeps. anyone know anything about that? |

If you know for sure that she's not whining because she needs to pee, take her out of the crate once she's quiet and settled. Play, praise, treat. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

I agree with Montana, your on the right track and just give her some time to get used to her new environment. A new home can be a scary thing for a puppy but patience, time, and training will help to quickly acclimate her. As far as the shaking.... could be doggy dreams, perhaps she's nervous or cold? You didn't mention where you got her? I assume that you've had her checked out with the vet, right? If it continues after she's gotten settled in, it might be a good idea to mention it to your vet. In the mean time, keep up with your efforts, remember to praise profusely, and allow her time to get settled in. -- Les Hilliard & Nikki the Super Shih-Tzu |

You are expecting too much too fast. Of course she doesn't know what
you want from her, you just got her. Also, at 8-10 weeks the muscles that control elimination sometimes aren't developed enough to hold it. At the same time you can't just put a puppy in a crate and expect it to know not to go to the bathroom. You need to properly crate train her and get her used to the crate. Read these. http://www.dogbehavioronline.com/cra...-your-dog.html http://dogbehavioronline.com/puppy-housetraining.html Kungo Bungo Ay wrote: I just brought home an 8 week old am staf pup to my house, she was the first one to leave the litter and she made in the crate while she was there. Actually a little play time after going potty would be ok, it will go a long way towards socialization, getting used to the new environment, and as a reward for going potty correctly. Since she's just went you can be reasonably safe that there will be no accidents. I say reasonably because with puppies you just never know but in most cases it's safe to play right after an elimination. If she gets too excited during play you might want to run her out again real quick before crating because it's not uncommon to need to pee after playing hard. I realize that this might be a little difficult to do at 2 or 3 in the morning but a couple minutes of play wouldn't hurt as long as you're up with her and will only help to increase your bond between each other. Now keep in mind i've only had her for about 18 hours now but she does cry for anywhere form 5-15 minutes when put in the crate... when should i expect this to stop? or should i say when should i get concerned when the crying doesnt end, and when shuold i expect her to go into her crate volentarily? Does she stop crying after 5-15 when she's put in the crate? Remember she's in a new environment and a little scared. Some crying is normal as she gets acclimated, give her time. If it continues for a long time, try sitting or lying down by the crate and talk to her. Put your fingers through the crate so she can sniff and lick them and you can scratch behind her ears or something like that. As long as the crate is never used for punishment, eventually she will come to think of it as a safe place and enter it on her own. I kept a couple of small chew toys in the crate for my dog to keep her busy while she was in the crate. If your dog has a couple of small toys, this might help with the crying once she gets used to her new home. also i am documenting the time she eats/crinks and the time she eliminates so i can see the pattern, but her pooping has been incinsistant, can i attribute this to the change in environment and give her a few days to settle in, b/c she is curious about EVERYTHING! thanks for the help and any more advice i am open to Cory You're doing ok, just give her time. As you go along I'm sure you'll beging to remember what you did to train your other dogs and it will get a little easier. -- Les Hilliard & Nikki the Super Shih-Tzu |

I will update her progress and post some pics within a few days. cory |
