Thanks so much for
clarifying what's going on and for not getting snarky with my judgemental rant! :-) To be honest that wasn't such a rant, as far as I was concerned. It was a genuine well stated expression of opinion--and a good opinion, too. Update on the medical problem: she is still doing both things and I spotted a streak of blood in some of the diarrhea, so I collected a sample and have an appointment in 2 hours with the evening vet. It'll be fun going there with a toddler and a Great Dane on the train instead of dinner time, but so it goes. I'm sorry to hear that she's not improving. I'd say that trip to the vet is a really good idea. Please let us know how that turns out. Well, we're back. It is simple but severe viral gastroenteritis--no emergency but good I took her in today so we could start with the meds before she starts getting dehydrated or undernourished (unlike many Danes she does not pig out and is always nice and slim, so a couple of days of not eating well show right up). She's getting... let's see.. metoclopramide hydrochloride for the vomiting and finidiar for the runs. He said to start her off with plain pasta when she wants to eat, so I'll put some on now in case she wants it tonight. We had a miracle happen on the way there. I had barely gone two blocks when I ran into one of her very best friends in the world, Nanoek the three-month-old Labrador, and her owner. He is a VERY nice man who listened to the whole story, rushed us all over to his house another block away, discussed things with his girlfriend, and drove me and Saskia to the vet while Walter stayed with his girlfriend, a pre-school teacher, and got to play with their unbelievably friendly dwarf Angora rabbit and color in pictures (well, scribble on them--he'll be 2 next month). Saskia found the whole thing very stressful, but the park lies between their house and ours and Nanoek hadn't had a run yet, so Saskia did get to work that stress off by dangling a puppy from her cheek by its teeth and spinning around a lot before falling over and waving her legs around--a very fun game. Walter was up way past his bedtime and to my surprise doesn't like samosas (dinner), but some leftover rice and a Curious George story put everything right and he's asleep. My husband couldn't just watch him or take Saskers because he's been in bed for two days with a particularly bad migraine, poor man. Now I need my own dinner and a shower, and then here's hoping these pills mean I'm not up every two hours again cleaning up dog vomit and going out into the street to let her have the runs! It's 9 p.m. over here, for the curious. That makes it noon in California--don't know about other places. --Katrina |

Glad to hear your neighbor was willing to help, your questions are answered, and Saskia is on the mend. Sounds like a good day. Thanks! Yup, and now she hasn't thrown up since yesterday at 5 (so about 21 hours ago) and has kept down a bowl of macaroni and egg. She's still rather listless (except in the park) but she's stretched out instead of curled up, and doesn't have that Dane "worried frown" as much now. And the landlady's sweet elderly mother is back from Turkey so we don't have the Insane One herself living illegally next door making constant threats and vandalizing her own house anymore. Things are looking up! Oh, and that stop pad I also posted about a couple of weeks back healed up just fine. --Katrina |

Saskia has now not thrown up since afternoon-before-yesterday, but
still has the runs. She has been eating gradually increasing amounts of macaroni and egg but today has completely burned out on that and seems very tired (which does not surprise me), so I went down to the Saturday market and talked things over with the fishmonger, who said whiting is what vets tell him to sell in this case. They were having a special on it, too--3 kilos for 6 Euros--so I got some and am boiling it up with rice now. Saskia is acting hungry but gives the macaroni SUCH a bored-disgusted look.... Anyway the eggs are making her, ummmm, smell up a room pretty quick, so we will see how the fish and rice treats her. --Katrina |
