Or is traumatized by the incident, and then forced to live with a fear of dogs for the rest of her life? I do not feel I took a risk with my daughter. That's because you're a doofus. If you bothered to actually READ my post. You would know I do NOT live any where near a trainer. I live in an extreamly small area. Our shelter is run by strictly volunteers. I have asked my vet about finding one. The closest one is across a toll brige and over 110 miles away. |

It seems more like a place where the older members know it all and just toss out what ever remarks they feel like it to the newer people. Boy, to me it looks like several knowledgeable people have taken the time to give you thoughtful and responsible replies--then when you stated that everyone's #1 choice, in-person help, was not going to happen, they (we) put more time and thought into offering alternatives. I did think the "dodged a bullet" comment was a bit abrupt when I first read it, but Jack is right: it's a legitimate, and important point. Because something went well in one instance, in a context where you are dealing with several unknowns, that doesn't necessarily mean you are on the right track. And short answers have their place; it can be easy to miss the point when qualifications and digressions are included. There are some posters on here I always skip, so maybe you have received insulting replies I haven't seen. You've also received some pretty good freebies from people to train dogs and owners for a living. Please try not to throw the baby out with the bathwater, OK? You, your daughter, and your dog stand to benefit from the advice you've been given here. Amy Dahl |

wrote in message ups.com... If you bothered to actually READ my post. You would know I do NOT live any where near a trainer. I live in an extreamly small area. Our shelter is run by strictly volunteers. I have asked my vet about finding one. The closest one is across a toll brige and over 110 miles away. If (and I stress IF) this trainer is any good with aggression issues, it would be worth at least one trip out there to get in person instruction on timing, handling etc. You could always call him or her and see what their philosophy on dog training is, what methods they might employ in a case like this, etc. If it sounds like a "go", then make a day of it, take a picnic, plan on seeing some sights on the way hone. Whatever. Just go....if they're *good*, that is. You could also post (or email, if you're concerned) your vague whereabouts so the people here might be able to help you find someone who could give you a hand. You have a few options here. While I'm glad nothing happened to your daughter, I'm honestly a little shocked that you didn't let your daughter know what all the new ground rules were *before* she was even in the same room with the dog. Sure, its ok that the dog didn't have an entirely negative reaction (but then I'm not convinced the whining at the stairs was a positive one either), but a potential problem here is that you might now be thinking its ok to let your daughter pet him (after all, *that* time was ok), and its still not. Its extremely easy....and extremely likely....for a frightened but curious dog to have moments of bravery where they investigate something that was a source of fear. This can actually be a *dangerous* time because its likely the dog will get herself in over her head, but then react on whoever happens to be nearby. Honestly speaking, that wasn't a good move on your part. Tara |

It's ABSOLUTELY INSANE that you call others child abusers, dog abusers and mental cases. YOU are ALL of those! Let's all just call him CM (Child Molester) for short - it's quick to type and fits Howe perfectly. Look, people. Most everyone has tried the "ignore him and he'll go away" mentality for what? 6 to 8 years? It doesn't work. If everyone decided to call this creep out and explain what a complete asshole he is instead of ignoring him, maybe he'll go away? Maybe not? I don't know. But the notion that ignoring him will make him disappear is utterly stupid. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. LET PEOPLE KNOW WHAT KIND OF A CREEP HE IS. Sitting back and adding him to your killfile is simply...plain...dumb; and AVOIDING the problem. Take a stance. |

Maybe I have what this group is all about wrong? I thought it was a place to throw ideas and advice around. It seems more like a place where the older members know it all and just toss out what ever remarks they feel like it to the newer people. I think that at least two or three people took some time to explain to you what they thought was happening, and offering suggestions. You were also advised that this sort of problem is very difficult to "diagnose" over the internet, and that getting in-person help would be best. I live in a rural area, too, but there are dog trainers around. Mustang Sally |
