Question Splenectomy, is this common?

We noticed our yellow lab not being quite himself - just out of the blue last Thursday. Decided to take him to be looked at and found out he had a mass in his belly. They did exploratory surgery to find out what organ had the mass (believed to be a tumor) and saw it was a ruptured splene. They went in and removed the splene. Still no word yet to see if it was in fact a tumor and if so, if it is cancer. Our beloved lab is 9 yrs old, healthy (or we thought so), loves to play and go for long walks in the fields and woods. He has been a hunting dog and our companion. He is home now recovering from his "middle of the night" surgery. Starting to eat a bit more, but no BMs yet. We have never experienced this before and I was just wondering if this is common in this breed? Has anyone else been through this and could let us know what to expect? We understand that if this was a cancerous tumor, chances are he will start developing them - just a matter of time.

Default Splenectomy, is this common?

Tumors involving the spleen are not *real* common at our practice, but not
all that uncommon. We've got pictures of some the size of youth soccer
balls. Recovery will be slow at first. Give him a week or so to make a huge
step forward. As for whether it's malignant... I'll have to ask vet hubby
when he gets back, but I *think* most he removes are not.
