Hello,
My GSD is about 16 months old and he is extremely skinny. Seems he has been stuck around 70 LBS for a few months. I feed him 6 cups a day of Nutro Lamb and Rice for large breeds. Even with all of the food, he is not gaining weight. You can also see his ribs quite easily. He is quite active. I took him to the vet and he got a clean bill of health without doing any blood tests. I just want to make sure that this issue of not gaining weight is typical for a GSD of his age. I don't want to feed him any more food. Any thoughts? Mike |

That seems typical of GSDs that are young and quite active. Seeing the
hint of ribs of my 3.5 years of age GSD when viewed from an angle is what I like to see. Seeing the spine is something I don't want to see. My GSD eats raw meat and bones, etc., so I can't really compare what our two dogs eat. Seems to me if the vet saw nothing wrong with your dog's weight, it should be okay...especially in this day of FAT dogs and people. My dog is quite active, with daily hikes and swimming. She weighs 68 lbs. and is approximately 24 inches tall...and would not be considered to be a big boned shepherd. Keep in mind that a GSD does not stop growing/filling out until about 3 years of age. wrote: Hello, My GSD is about 16 months old and he is extremely skinny.
