Hello
Last month moved cross country to Arlingon VA... The move was quite stressful for our dog (she never liked to drive and this was the longest she ever had to be in a car - 6 hours). I don't want to put her through that again! I now have to go out of town for the next week. I am driving - but again, it would be too much to ask of my dog to take her along... What is the best thing to do in this case with my dog (healthy, fairly well adjusted)? I have heard you can give them sedatives to help calm them down during trips - but I'd rather not resort to drugs. I'd like to have her stay here, but am too new and don't know anyone in my area to help me out. I can't stand the thought of kennels too... Thoughts? |

Thoughts? ++ I travel with my dog also, but I stop and walk her around every 2 hours and give her water. I imagine you also do this; if not 6 hours is way too long to keep a dog in the car without walking and letting her drink. If it is a small dog, putting the dog in a crate might make the dog feel more comfortable and safe. Otherwise, I would hire someone to take care of the dog while you are gone. Maybe a friend could stay at your house with your dog, and pay the friend something for the service. |

I can't stand the thought of kennels too... This area has a lot of options. You can have someone stay at your house and watch your dog, have the dog stay at the dog sitter's house, have her stay at a cageless boarding facility or stay at a traditional kennel. A good source for finding them is he http://www.metropets.org/YellowPages/daycare.php When I've had to leave my dogs behind, I have either left them with someone from the dog park that I trust (she does dogwalking/dog sitting on the side), or at a kennel. The one use is Dogtown - http://www.dogtownmaryland.com/ Most of these, with the exception of traditional kennels, require that your dog be good with other dogs. Suja |
