I spent most of the weekend at the Northern New England
Sleddog Symposium. Lots of people brought dogs, mostly
Siberian Huskies (woohoo!). I'd guess there were about
60-70 Siberians there. And someone brought a cat.

I haven't a clue why they brought it. Someone was carrying
the cat around in her arms. A lot of mushers have toy dogs
as house pets but this was just one of those "Huh?" things.

There was a red, bi-eyed Siberian puppy that was about 4
months old and just adorable.

This reminds me of the old Warner Brothers' cartoon where a nasty
little boy drops a cat into the middle of a dog show.

Yeah, that's a big ol' "huh?".

Although our Siberian population is likely to decrease considerably in
the near future, I have to say that the thought of a 4 month-old Sibe
puppy, even a bi-eyed red, does not tempt me in the least.

Hah! There were a lot of adolescent Siberians there, too
(there were bikejoring, scooter, and rig races Sunday
morning, plus people brought younger dogs to get them used
to traveling and to the mayhemious atmosphere at mushing
events), and it's always a good nopuppiesinmyhouse reminder
to spend time around a yearling Siberian. However, I was
talking with the people who sold me Image and they described
a possible upcoming breeding that definitely made me sit up
and think "boing!"

Pretty much everybody thinks this, too, but the more time I
spend around other people's dogs the more I appreciate my
own.

BTW, a Chinook club had a booth at the trade fair and boy,
those are nice, even-tempered dogs. I'm sure they left the
alligators at home, but still, these were awfully mellow
fellows.

Oh yeah. Tasha was about a year old when we got her, and though I've
not had a Sibe puppy, I have to believe that adolescent Sibes aren't a
whole lot better. With the pups, at least you don't have the
attitude.

Adolescent Siberian Huskies can be *awful*. I think you've
seen that photo of my shredded bedroom, with Emmett still
pulling on some bedding. And he's grown up to be a very
composed, well-behaved dog. I can't imagine Eclipse at that
age.

If you didn't know what you're looking at you'd probably
think "Lab X." There's someone local who breeds them and
when I saw her with a dog at obedience classes and asked her
if her dog was a Chinook she was extremely surprised and
said that everybody looks at the dogs and assumes they're

Now that I've seen pictures of what appears to be Chinooks, I'm still pretty
sure my first thought would be 'mutt'. So variable in type, anywhere
between shepherdy looking to lab looking.
