I have a 3 year-old Jack Russel dog who is becoming a total pain in
the @ss and I seek the advice of the klnowledgeable among you. Spot is a family pet who we've had since a puppy and he's treated well. But he growls at my wife and my kids (12 and 14 years old) whenever they try to say hello to him, give him a pat or just be nice to him. He growls at people who come to visit and he just doesn't seem to like much attention most of the time. He's never bitten anyone. When he growls he never ever bares his teeth. Some times he even growls at me, but I wont tolerate that and I give him a good old whack on the backside with a rolled up newspaper, after which he realises I am still the boss and he acknowledges my place above him in the 'pack'. Other family members have tried this but it doesnt work,, he just growls even louder at them. Let me say one thing here. I know a little about pack behaviour in dogs. I'm not a n00b at all of this. But I've never had a dog like this. Maybe I just have a dog who doesnt like people much.. after all there are humans like that too. We have two Jack Russells (should have mentioned that earlier). The other is a 7 year-old bitch called Patch. In fact she is Spot's older sister from a previous litter with the same parents. Anyway, Patch is the complete opposite of Spot. She loves attention and is the most docile and loving family pet you could imagine. So why is Spot such a pain in the ass? We try hard to love him and give him loads of attention, but it always has to be on his terms or not at all. Any advice would be appreciated. It;s got so bad lately that I have made an appointment with the vet next week to have Spot 'neutered', i.e to have his testicles removed. The vet says this will help and we are going ahead with it, but I'm wondering what is causing this growling and if there is anything else I can to do integrate him more into our family. |

If you are trying to save the dog world from all the stupid humans who post in these dog NG's, then you are not going to do it by posting 12,000 line rants that no-one can even be ARSED reading. Clearly all dog-related newsgroups have been made un-useable by this one complete ******. Can no-one find this 'Wizard' ******* and put him out of his misery? I'm out of here. Sorry I ever posted.
