: Tara said in rec.pets.dogs.health: Vet suggested keeping her on it for a couple of days past what the usual treatment plan is since her results showed she was so strongly loaded with the buggers. Even lightly loaded, the common advice for giardia seems to be double the normal dose period. I hope the Flagyl/metronidazole works for you (it provided only a temporary measure for Rocky years ago). Another option is Panacur. Really interesting to see this. Annie's on 625 mgs of Flagyll (split into two doses per day) for 7 days. I have never dealt with this in a dog before, so I assumed this was the normal dosing procedure. Is it possible that this won't take careof it? Damn, that would suck. Did the Panacur ultimately do the trick for Rocky? Tara |

That's the bizarro thing about Giardia--the absolute explosive diarrhea followed by several days of relatively normal stool. I didn't need panacur. |

Yeah, tell me about it. Explosive dirrhea is bad enough, but never knowing when its going to kick in, and trying everything to alter what she's given access to in the (mistaken) idea that there is some external control over the cycle is crazy making. I was even wondering if it was something in my water that she wasn't used to. I'd started giving her only double filtered water to drink!!! Each thing I tried would seem to help, and then....BANG....it would come back. Its such a relief to know that I don't have to scour my brane for daily solutions. Thanks for letting me know it worked for you. I'm hoping it does for Annie as well. Tara |

Did the Panacur ultimately do the trick for Rocky? Rocky's giardia symptoms kept reoccurring, so I finally contacted a research vet at the U of Calgary (the vet who developed the giardia vaccine a few years ago). He said that since the broader-spectrum metronidazole wasn't working, to try Panacur for two successive treatment periods. That cleared it up. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |
