Hi, I'm new to this group and I am in need of some desperate help! I
have a male german shepherd who is 1year 4months old. He is a great dog, and very smart. However the problem is that he chews up my kitchen floor. (I have those tiles that just peel and stick.) I keep his cage in the kitchen so it is easier to clean up the hair he leaves behind. Jake (the dog) is not in his kennel often, just when we leave. He is certainly not an outdoor dog. We have even moved his cage to another room and he pulled up the carpet. I don't know what to do with him! He has gone through several "kong" balls and chew toys. He has also chewed up this metal cage and 2 rugs. Now, this isn't something that he does just when he is in his cage and we are away. He does this even if we are in the next room and he is out roaming around. If anyone has some suggestions I would love to hear them. Thank you! -One irritated owner- |

Thank you! -One irritated owner- Is this your first GSD? have you had him from a puppy?.....You need to teach him what is acceptable and what isn't. You said he is roaming around the house chewing on floors and carpeting...you need to keep him supervised at all times, that means no roaming around the house for starters. 16 months old is still a puppy for a GSD,..make sure he has lots of his own chew toys and redirect him each time you catch him in the act, if your keeping him with you at all times then he can't chew on anything not allowed....trying to correct him after the deed is done will do no good......if he is chewing on his metal cage then get him a much heavier cage....the crate I use for my 10 yr old GSD is very thick gauge and large enough for a Giant breed. No way she is chewing thru that if she tried....even at 10 yrs old my girl can destroy a large stuffed toy in minutes lol.. What are you doing to work his mind and body? GSDs are very intelligent and love to work. Is he in training at all for obedience or any other type of venue? If not, you really need to be ob training and exercise his mind and body....some dogs will chew out of boredom.....GSDs do best with a job to do. there is a couple good trainers that read this board (that I know of) I am sure they can offer good detailed help. It's not that it was insulting, but that these people are here just to **** all over the place and that they aren't otherwise worth reading. It's always been true that folks posting from AOL are a little more, uh, "limited" than the rest of the community but this business of running over here to stalk Janet and make a stinky mess for everybody else is beyond just being a little slow. So, screw 'em. snow! -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Sending more troops into a war is properly called an "escalation." |
