My daughter and I use spanish to converse about sensitive topics, such
as "getting the dogs their supper". It allows us to negotiate issues
like whether it needs to be done right now, this instant, or whether it
can wait until you've finished what ever it is you're currently doing.

But if the dogs hear you mention anything about breakfast, supper or
eating, in english, it triggers an immediate storm of begging, and so
much for any hope of sitting down, scanning the headlines and drinking a
cup of coffee.
