Default Canine gifts (?)

If I hadn't seen this with my own eyes I probably wouldn't have believed it
and I'm still not sure my interpretation of what I saw is correct.

Anyhow, here goes...

When we have meat on the bone at our house the rule is that Urger (7 yo
Anatolian Shepherd) gets first dibs on the bone and Balim (6 mo Cocker
Spaniel) is subsequently allowed to find the bone and gnaw on it herself.
Last night's T-bone came in two parts so I gave the bigger piece to Urger
and, after some thought, the smaller to Balim. Dogs departed to their
separate places. After a very short time however, Balim returned without
bone and obviously looking for more. I had a brief moment of panic, thinking
that she'd swallowed it--there was no way she could have finished it in such
a short time. I frantically checked her throat and belly but found nothing
and she seemed in good spirits. Nevertheless I kept a close watch on her for
the rest of the night.

Come morning I let the dogs out into the yard as usual. Normally Balim
returns in less than half an hour but this morning she didn't. After an hour
I started becoming concerned and went out to look for her. I went to the
usual place: a gate leading into the yard of neighbors (an elderly retired
couple) who must use our entrance because their own property is cut off from
the road. These neighbors have a 2-yo Jack Russell Terrier (Korsan) and he
and Balim are Best Friends: once they start playing it can last for hours.
The gate was open and Balim and Korsan were romping around inside the yard
as usual. After snagging Balim (call Korsan; Balim follows), I put her on
leash and began to take her back to our house.

That's when I saw the bone, there on the ground in the neighbor's yard. It
was definitely the same bone because I recognized it from its unusual shape.
It was stripped clean.

Now Korsan is terrified of Urger and won't come anywhere near our house so
that bone could only have gotten there because Balim brought it there. But
why would she have brought it? Was it canine "show and tell"? Was it a gift?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I'd caution you
about giving cooked bones to your dogs, because they splinter
fairly easily, and the splinters can penetrate an intestine.

I love reading your stories about your dogs! Does Balim have
Urger wrapped around her little toe?
