Default Hip soreness

I have a lab pointer mix male. Bosco is only 2 but since we have
introduced him to hiking and swimming the next day he seems to be very
sore. The problem only seems to exist in his back legs and he seems
to be fine after he gets going. The pain seems to only last about one
day after our outings.
I was at first afraid of arthritis or hip dysphasia, but he never
exhibits pain any other time.
Does anyone know of something that could be causing this pain, or is
it just soreness from all the fun? Is there anything we can do to
help the pain?

Thanks!
Ashley and Bosco

hi ashley

it may just be that he's a bit achey from too much exercise...

you might want to try a homeopathic remedy called 'rhus tox 6c' which
is great for achey muscles. There are no side effects, and its the
same remedy and dose for children animals or pets!

you should be able to get rhus tox 6c from the chemist. The medicine
comes as tablets... humans suck the tablets, so its probably a good
idea to crush them and put them in water or let him lick them from
your hand.

try giving him a dose when he gets home from his long walk and again
at bedtime - you should find that he wakes up without the stiffness

if this works, you can also try giving him a dose before his hike too

as i said - no side effects, the worst that will happen is nothing!

hope that helps

If a dog isn't in the proper shape for a whole day of hiking and
swimming, it's not unusual for him to be sore for a day or two
afterwards.

As with any physical exercise, it's wise to start off slow and then
gradually increase time and resistence.

The problem only seems to exist in his back legs and he seems
to be fine after he gets going.

Does his rear end "wobble"? Does he "bunny hop"? "Stretch" one of his
rear legs out? Does he yelp and/or whine?

How exactly does he express the pain?

Probably. But without knowing more, examining him, etc., it's really
impossible to know.

Yes, it could be CHD, etc. But it's more likely to be soreness.

Is there anything we can do to help the pain?

Get your dog in shape. GRADUALLY!

That means a little hiking and swimming, on a daily basis if possible,
until he's ready for a whole day of it.

If after a week or so of daily exercise (hiking and swimming, if
possible), he's still expressing some pain or unsteadiness, it's
probably time to see your vet.
