The agency I work for had a fundraiser tonight. The local police
department had a table and also brought a squad car along to show off
to all the kids. A K-9 unit. With a 21-month old Malinois who was
the sweetest thing EVER. He worked that crowd like nobody's business.
I am sure it would have been different if his handler had been in
danger or he'd been given attack commands, but for tonight, he was
just a happy lovebug boy charming all the kids into petting him. He
reminded me of Gunther, only with a work ethic.
i was cruising a malinois rescue website last night. i'm not sure if
i'd be eaten alive by one or not, but they're sure nifty dogs.
The one sad thing about seeing the police dog was that he reminded me
a lot of Molly's personality. The work ethic, eagerness to please and
watchfulness even when having a good time are a lot like her. But she
could never be a police dog because of her anxieties. Fortunately, we
haven't had occasion to see how she'd react around gunfire. But given
her reaction to thunder and fireworks, I don't think it would be
pretty for her or her handler. Not that she needs to be a police dog.
We're happy to have her as a family dog and wouldn't want her to be
anywhere else. But it's just a little sad to see a glimpse of what
her life could be like if she kept the good points without her issues.
Gunther did develop a work ethic today, naturally enough since I just
commented on his not having one. I threw the dogs out in the backyard
because they wanted to play Wrestle to the Death. It's not to the
death because they will kill each other, but because I am going to
kill them if they make my body the center of their mania. Gunther
decided to be a big baby and stay inside with me. Suddenly Gunther
starts alarm barking while looking out the glass slider. I look out
in the direction Gunther is looking to see Molly in the planter they
all know dogs are not supposed to be in. When I called out to her to
get out of the planter, she got out and Gunther settled down to his
normal nothing matters self. Apparently, Gunther was ratting her out.
