At least I wouldn't have, in a million years. I was at the vet,
dropping off Khan's urine sample, and in comes a lady with a cute and
fluffy dog. Very sweet and outgoing, and the owner said that the
cheerful disposition is a breed norm. Most definitely not an american
breed, and is a working dog. Good reason for all that fluffy coat,
although I've since read that there is a short coated variety too.
This one weighed in about 50 pounds, and could definitely stand to
lose weight, probably 10 pounds; anyway, the descriptions said small -
medium sized dog. The dog had double dews, in the back legs too,
which is acceptable according to breed standards.

This breed is not recognized by the AKC, but is recognized by UKC and
CKC.

I am going to guess, based merely on serendipity, a Karelian Bear Dog.

I saw puppy pix of one today and I wanted one! But haven't done any
further research.

White, bearded, and balding? He's a math professor and, I
think, available.

Too funny. So you WERE trolling me!

Berger des Pyrenees (aka Pyrenean Shepherd).

Getting closer. Additional hints:

It's the only native dog of its country, and at one time, the numbers had
dwindled to the point where there was some question about the sustainability
of the breed, long-term.

Beautiful dog! Boy, it is hard to take good pictures of an all black dog.

Cheater!

Icelandic Sheepdog.

Yup. Cool little dog with a big smile on his face. Reminded me of a poorly
bred Corgi gone really hairy. I guess this one wasn't as much of a low
rider as he appeared to be, but boy, was he colossally fat!

I'd heard of the breed, but had no idea they came with two
different coats. Plus, it's not a breed which comes up often
(at all?) in casual conversation unless one lives in
Reykjavík. So cheating was pretty well mandatory.

No need to 'splain. I'm well versed in that particular art.

I should have known that it'd be a spitz breed you'd bring up.
That should have been Clue One.

Now, that's not fair. I bring them up when I encounter any breed I consider
cool and new. Last one was a Mastiff, wasn't it?

Besides, this one should make you happy too. It may be a spitz, but it
herds too. Win-Win.

Berger des Pyrenees (aka Pyrenean Shepherd). I know a few
each of the rough and smooth-face varieties. The first one I
saw was at a CKC agility trial and the only thing I could
think of was poorly bred black Aussie.

Nope, that couldn't be it. I'm assuming that AKC accepts them because there
was one on the televised version of the National Invitational Agility
Championship. Totally awesome dog - he was absolutely incredible on the
course. I predict there will be a lot more of them doing AKC agility very
soon.

One of my neighbors has one of those. He's a sad case. When we first
moved here, 10 years ago now, that dog was always tied out, no human
interaction. Once in a while he would break free and come around here
and bark and growl agressively. I was happy to have put up a fence, the
first in this part of my neighborhood. Last year they finally put up a
fence (why not? they only had to do one side) and they gave him run of
the yard. He seems calmer, but he still doesn't have any human
interaction. Apparently they got him for the kids, who quickly lost
interest, and so he was banished. The kids have since moved out.

I did see one of the kids visiting recently. I thought it was odd that
he was in the back yard. Then I noticed he had a puppy.
