Default SERIOUS Dog (and cat) food recall (includes Nutro)

Hopefully by now y'all have heard about the dog food recall. This one is
pretty serious as animals are getting sick and dying, mostly from kidney
failure. The cause of the problems is unknown at this time, but the brand
list was published this morning. I was surprised to see Nutro included on
the list of foods with problems. Since I know some of you feed Nutro, I
wanted to make sure you are aware.

Here's the list of brands:

Here's the story:
http://www.menufoods.com/recall/Pres...l_03162007.pdf

And for those of you with cats:

Scary stuff.

Really. Makes you wonder, too, is the food packaged under all
these brands essentially the same?

According to the press release, it's just cuts and gravy canned and
pouches that are a problem, not kibble. Or am I missing something?
Because Euk, which I just started using a few weeks ago, is on the
list.

I returned the pouches of old roy that I had. It sucks really it's the only
wet that Lady can eat without having an allergic reaction. At this point
I'm just going to switch to buying hamburg and boiling it and mixing it in
with the dry. It's getting so you can't trust anything you buy any more.

This whole situation absolutely horrifies me. Someone posted on the cat
group that his cat got very sick with kidney problems in February, and of
course he was eating one of the foods listed. Thankfully the cat is okay
now, but will always have kidney disease. The owner has spent $1100 so
far, and he was one of the lucky ones.

I only recently switched my cats from Nutro (wet and dry) to Innova. I
feel like I really dodged a bullet or two, but also feel absolutely awful
for everyone who has been impacted by this. What upsets me the most is
how poorly Menu Foods got the information out about just which brands
were effected. They weren't even clear about the fact that (apparently)
only wet foods are a problem. I expect they are going to lose their
asses over this, and rightfully so, but that won't do anything to make up
for the pets that were lost.

I'm so sorry for everyone who has been effected by this.

I have to assume what Montana said is true of the recalled dog foods
that have allegedly caused kidney failure in some dogs and cats. It has
got to be some common product used by all of the dog food manufacturers
on the list. If it is some preservatice or oil I wonder why they do not
name it. I would be mighty P.O. to think I had been paying big bucks
for some of the high dollar brands if the cheap-o products contained the
same mixture.
I have used Purina for years except when I was trying to put weight on
a dog in conformation. It has worked well for my dogs they are almost
14 and 15.
I am so sorry for the people and animals effected.

I just checked several cans of dog food I had purchased from Safeway
(Priority Brand), and Food Lion. Most had dates earlier than those
affected, but one Food Lion Lamb and Rice cuts in gravy has a date of Dec
14 09, while the list goes to Dec 13, and then starts again in January. I
use the canned food sparingly, to mix with Muttley's usual kibble, but
probably even small amounts may be toxic. There was another recall of dry
food a little over a year ago for Diamond brand, also for Aflatoxin which
is similar to the Vomitoxin that was responsible for a recall in Nature's
Recipe in 1995. It is a fungus that forms on grains. Some interesting
(although probably slanted) information is on this website for an
independent manufacturer:
http://aplus-flint-river-ranch.com/d...ond-recall.php

It was interesting to learn that some dogs refused to eat the tainted food,
but were then tricked into eating it by mixing it with treats or other
savory food.

I am somewhat hesitant to feed the can that has a date so close to the
affected ones, as well as the others that are also close to the listed
dates. I would need strong assurances that they were safe. It would
probably be best to get my money back and feed homecooked food. I have been
getting meat ends of smoked turkey, ham, and beef from an Amish market for
only $1.00 a pound, and I have been eating much of it myself in soups,
mixed with inexpensive, nutritious, and safe brown rice, barley and beans.
Muttley enjoys my cooking, so maybe I'll stay clear of cheap canned foods.
They're probably all just as liable to be tainted.

Thanks for the warning.

Paul and Muttley

Do you know what she's allergic to? I am sure there are plenty of other
canned foods out there that she can have. Checking my stash (which is
running low)...

Neura 95% Lamb - Lamb, Lamb Broth, Potatoes, Guar & Carrageenan Gums, Ground
Flaxseed + vitamins/minerals

Pinnacle Duck & Potato - Duck, Duck Broth, Fresh Potatoes, Oats, Oat Bran,
Potato Protein, Flax Seed, Grapeseed Oil, Sage, Rosemary, +
vitamins/minerals

Solid Gold Turkey, Ocean Fish, Carrots & Sweet Potatoes - Turkey, Turkey
Broth, Ocean Fish, Carrots, rown Rice, Sweet Potatoes, Cottage Cheese,
Flaxseed Oil, Guar Gum, Olive Oil + vitamins/minerals

Merrick Wilderness Blend - Buffalo, Salmon Broth, Venison, Salmon, Fish
Broth, Whole Brown Rice, Fresh Carrots, Fresh Yukon Gold Potatoes, Fresh
Green Peas, Fresh Golden Delicious Apples, Potato Starch, Egg, Olive Oil,
Flax Seed Oil + vitamins/minerals

Fromm Tuna Entree - Tuna, Tuna Broth, Carrots, Peas, Potatoes, Potato
Starch, Tomato Paste + vitamins/minerals

Neura makes similar foods with different proteins. Regal makes a Venison &
Barley that I don't have right now. Merrick has a whole bunch of
concoctions that have weird proteins. Pinnacle also makes a fish & potato
based canned food, etc. I am sure that Innova, Solid Gold, Canidae et al.
have canned foods that are worth looking into as well.

She can eat the duck and potato but at $1.49 a can I may as well buy hamburg
the price per pound is about the same and this way I know it's something
she'll be safe eating. I was lucky with this round of recalls. I had
pouches of food made the day before or a day after the dates of the batches
they posted. I returned everything it's just not worth it to risk it.
That's two food recals on dog food in less than a year. I'm not a fan of
feeding raw but I'm really thinking about swithing them to cooked meat from
the local butcher.

It won't be affordable if that's all that's being fed. I mix mine with
kibble. Just to add a little variety, and to make it interesting.
