Default the pet food recall

There's an aspect to the recall that I haven't seen on the news-- yet.
There are people who save money by eating pet food, usually the elderly
or the mentally ill. They're the people who wouldn't see or wouldn't
understand about a recall. I'm worried that a person could die from
poisonous canned food too. They'd be especially vulnerable.

Does anyone have any recent news on the number of pet deaths?

I do get some television news, but I mostly try to keep myself on the
media-low side. (Which is to say that I'm hardly media-free, just try
to keep away from the t.v., newspaper, and radio, except for music and
stupid entertainment.) So I guess I was selfish when I first heard
about the recall. I quickly realized they were talking about canned
food, noted that Cubbe gets only dry food and didn't think about it
until friends I haven't heard from in ages started emailing me warnings.
Now I'm curious enough about what's going on with the recall to
subscribe here again to see what y'all are saying about it.

I was only adding like 1/4 to 1/3 can of the wet food to Muttley's usual
inexpensive kibble because I thought it was healthier. It looked like it
was mostly chunks of meat, but apparently it is mostly grains that are
processed with some nasty meat byproducts to look and taste like meat. I
leave the dry kibble out for him to eat whenever he likes, but when I add
the wet stuff he will eat it all right away. As noted elsewhere, I can get
100% safe meat ends with no fillers for $1 a pound. I can eat it myself,
and mix parts that have fat, gristle, or skin with the kibble and it will
be much safer and healthier, being 100% meat and safe for human
consumption. Sometimes I also find lunch meats that are close to expiration
date on sale for about $1 a pound.

I can also cook up my own brown rice, barley, soy beans, and other healthy
grains for well under $1 a pound, and I'm sure it is much healthier for
dogs, and it is safe for humans. I'll probably stay with moderately priced
kibble, which I find on sale for maybe $8 for 20 lb, but the recall a
little over a year ago was for Diamond brand dry food. The problem so far
has been with a mold that grows on grain, and apparently is most prevalent
on corn, which has very little nutritional value except as roughage.
Probably safer to feed sawdust.

I have ordered a "free" sample of higher quality kibble from A+ Flint River
Ranch www.aplusfrr.com , and I might use some of their products in the
future. They had some very interesting information on their website about
irresponsible practices on the part of the big pet food companies in
testing and quality control. I hope this recall forces them to clean up
their act, but most likely the company will just go bankrupt and pay out a
pittance in a class action suit, while the perps use their golden
parachutes and later start up another company.

Why aren't you feeding him better quality food in the first
place? The cost works out to be about the same in the end
and it's healthier for him.

Salt and nitrites ... yum!

Not to mention that pork is often implicated in pancreatitis in
dogs. I wouldn't feed my dog ham if it were free.

I thought it was animal fat in excess that caused pancreatitis, not pork
specifically.

Yup.

http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=myths

As part of a well balanced diet, pork isn't any more dangerous than
beef, lamb or chicken. The fat content is key, and many pets suffer
from pancreatitis when fed excessively fatty, greasy table scraps -
which are not part of a balanced diet. The most susceptible animals
are those who don't eat anything but kibble all year and suddenly get
an overload of "goodies" on thanksgiving or other holidays.

I think some folks still harken back to the good ol' days, when pork
did have much more fat than *today's* pork, which is actually pretty
lean overall.
