Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone with experience especially with German Shepherds might be able to help me out. I have a female I have had since 7 weeks. She is now a little over 9 months. At about 3 months she was attacked by a Sher pei in the face (20 stitches) she was fine after that emotionally at the dog park and at home with my 2 other Rack Russels. Then at 4 months same Sher pei attacked again (40 stitches and now Sher pei is gone). Ok so here is issue now with other dogs I take her to dog park almost everyday she walks in with tail tucked way under hair up. Most times other dogs just sniff and walk away. But, then there is always one who persists in making her pee on the sidewalk. So the rest time at dog park she basically sits at my feet and watches and you can see her almost jump at the puppy running by but then something in her head stops her. She does not fear kids or adults. She is very relaxed around people. At home my 2 Jacks are 5 years old and they basically keep her at the bottom of the pack and don't play fight or anything to give her confidence. I am confused on the alpha(me) and playing rope tug though thats just minor confidence builder. Thanks in advance David |

I.e., don't take her back to that park (if the park allowed that Shar Pei back a second time, it's not the kind of park that anyone should be taking his dogs to). So once wasn't enough, eh? You had to expose her to the same Shar Pei a second time, right? Mr Jack is it? The Sher pei busted through my backyard fence twice. "not from the dog park" but what the hell does that matter. If you can't help shut up...... First off to Jack sorry...
Now we got to the park for social fun and exercise. Not all of us can be cat lovers and sit on the couch all day watching tv. She loves to play ball in the water (lake) there are many reasons to enjoy life outside the home to mention. If you could just see her watching other dogs play and almost taking that step to go but not you would understand and it has nothing to do with the memory of where the incident happened. (that was in my own backyard). anyway thanks. and no I don't need to be flamed.....god already does that thank you On 2007-03-30 13:10:12 -0400, Shelly said: David wrote: If you can't help shut up...... 1. Thanks in advance David ================== What I am thinking after reading your message is that your poor dog is terrified. This is not a fun place to take your dog. If you went to a park and someone beat you to a pulp, and then you returned and got beat to a pulp a second time, would you go back for a third time? You would be stupid if you did. It is cruel to force your dog to return to a place where she was almost killed twice. Find another quiet safe place to walk your dog. If the tail is between the legs, that is not a safe place to her. It will take her a long time to regain her confidence, so be patient with her. That's an awful story. |

I'm asking you why you take to a specific place that, based on your description, she is scared of. What is it you are trying to achieve? If you could just see her watching other dogs play and almost taking that step to go but not you would understand and it has nothing to do with the memory of where the incident happened. (that was in my own backyard). Then what do you attribute her fearfulness to? The thing is, exposing the dog to large amounts of the things that trigger her fearfulness *can* work, but it can also backfire. I think it would be in your dog's best interest if you talked to a good behaviorist or trainer who can observe her in person, because any advice anyone here could give you will rely on your ability to accurately describe what's going on, and I really don't have much faith in that happening. anyway thanks. and no I don't need to be flamed.....god already does that thank you I haven't a clue what you're talking about. -- Shelly http://www.cat-sidh.net (the Mother Ship) http://esther.cat-sidh.net (Letters to Esther) |

I've seen dogs like that come around, but with some work on the part of their owners. But, then there is always one who persists in making her pee on the sidewalk. You've got options. Either don't go to the dog park at all (since she doesn't seem to be getting anything out of it), go when this particular dog is not there (hoping that she'll interact with the other dogs) or continue to do what you're doing, which doesn't appear to be working. So the rest time at dog park she basically sits at my feet and watches and you can see her almost jump at the puppy running by but then something in her head stops her. Try going when there are either no dogs around so she can get used to the smells without worrying, or when there are few dogs (especially known friendlies) around as an alternate to what you're doing. Talk to a trainer or behaviorist who can watch her and give a solid plan for you to act on. That's probably your best bet. Suja |

Give her time. Keep socializing her and just take it slow. She is scared
because it happened twice not once but twice. If you stop taking her to the park she will start to turn all that confusion into herself and she might become a fear biter. She just has to come out of her shell that's all. Has she been to any obedience class's. That could help her bonding with you and help her feel more in control and focused. This way she would place her focus on you and not what happed to her. So if she starts to freak out during a moment you gently get her attention and have her sit. Don't make a big deal about it. Imagine if you had been in two car accidents one not long after you started to heal from the first, you would be kinda scared to get back in a car.
