My husband and I have an 11 month old female dog and yesterday just
rescued a (1 y/o ???) male dog who just got neutered 2 days ago. He is insistent on humping our female dog and I was wondering how to stop this behavior. Does it take a while for the dog's hormones to be released after the neuter? Is it just a dominance thing? Should I just allow the behavior? Please help. |

It's impossible for anyone here to know for sure why the new dog is humping the old dog, but it could well be that he's unsure of himself and is trying to establish himself above the female in the hierarchy, by literally putting her in her place. In any event, if you don't want him humping the other dog, it's okay to tell him to knock it off. -- Shelly http://www.cat-sidh.net (the Mother Ship) http://esther.cat-sidh.net (Letters to Esther) |

It's even advisable to tell him to knock it off. It doesn't matter WHY he's doing it. You should make it clear that it's not allowed, regardless of why. I don't know the OP's dogs, so I wouldn't go that far. While it's important to be able to call off the humper, and totally appropriate to do so if the behavior is bothersome or inappropriate, there are times when it's beneficial to let two packmates play the humping game. Dogs do a lot of non-aggressive pack jostling during play, so the humping game can actually work as a pressure valve, and lead to *less* posturing and snarking at other times. -- Shelly http://www.cat-sidh.net (the Mother Ship) http://esther.cat-sidh.net (Letters to Esther) |

Well, they have been very good together so far. They play hard but
not too rough (no biting, growling, etc). Butch (new dog) is about 1.5 times the size of Brinley (old dog) and is clearly stronger than her, however, Brinley fights back and tries to be the dominant one herself. Last night was crazy with the dogs chasing eachother in circles through the house. |

I'd have him knock it off anyway, without making a big deal about it. Otherwise it may develop into a habit. In fact, that may be why he's humping her now. He's already developed (or is developing) the habit. It's always easier to break bad habits sooner rather than later. Give the dog something else to do, an equally good "pressure valve," like having him "sit" on command and then get rewarded for a speedy compliance. -- Handsome Jack Morrison So long! Ta-ta! Unfortunately it doesnt appear that the previous owner trained him at all. I am going to call the place I trained Brinley and have him enrolled in a class. Hopefully this will help. But MY dogs simply aren't allowed. But then, my dogs aren't allowed to snark either. It just doesn't happen |

Should I just allow the behavior? Please help. It won't be any consolation, I know... our 11 year old Lab was neutered at 6 mos. and he still occasionally tries to air-hump some of the females he encounters. We stop it when it happens, but we haven't succeeded in preventing it. You'll probably have the most success if you can identify clues in his behavior that he is about to start, and distract him at that point, before he gets going. With Oppie, he doesn't give any warning that we've noticed, but your dog may be different. Since the male was just introduced yesterday, it could be a combination of residual hormones and trying to sort out his position w/r/t your other dog in your "household pack". Make sure he knows that YOU are the leader. FurPaw -- My family values don't involve depleted uranium. To reply, unleash the dog. |

Hi -- we were surprised that our 2 female litter mates hump each other -- I
thought it was just a male dog thing. When we spoke to our vet she agreed that it is a dominance issue, but said we should discourage it as much as we can. I simply say their name sternly and pull them apart when they do it. So far it has not stopped but it is much less an occuance than when they first started the behavior. And it is not just Lily doing it to Lulu -- Lulu also does it to Lily, so in one way I am glad that one dog (so far) does not dominate the other. I find that all I need to do now is yell out the name of the dog doing the humping and they immediately stop. So they know they should not be doing it but have yet to stop completely. I do not know if this helps, but this is my experience -- good luck!! Kristen "CHELL" wrote in message ups.com...
