It sounds to me like you will do well with an adult dog of the breeds you
have suggested as being to your husband's liking. I would probably go
with
a dog around 3 years old (or older), unless you can find a particularly
laid
back younger dog. I would strongly recommend that all members of the
family
attend obedience classes with your new dog, whoever that might turn out to
be.

I volunteer with the Virginia German Shepherd Rescue, and I know for a
fact
that we have volunteers local to your area (Virginia Beach, but close
enough). If you are interested in a German Shepherd, please take a look
at
our rescue website to see if this is something you would like to pursue
(http://www.shepherdrescue.org/pages/available.html - A dog like Mickey
would be a good fit, I thinnk). Just keep in mind that there are
unfortunately too many dogs coming in all the time, so even if the right
dog
for you is not there yet, he or she may end up in rescue at a later point
in
time. I don't know if the local Golden Retriever rescue works in Norfolk,
but it wouldn't hurt to find out. Their website is he
