Default House training

I have a three year old cocker spaniel named Ozzie. We thought he was
house trained, and then he went pee in PetSmart. What is the best way
to house train a three year old dog? I have tried almost everything.
Please help!

Are you sure it's a housetraining issue? He could have been nervous or
spooked by something. Look at all the circumstances to be sure you
understand what HE thought was happening.

Is PetSmart a familiar place for him? If not, he may not have
understood that this wasn't the kind of "outside the house" place
that's acceptable for peeing. Dogs aren't real good at generalization;
sometimes they need to be taught the same thing in different places
and circumstances in order to understand that it applies everywhere.
If that's what's going on, do what you did when he was a puppy, but do
it in PetSmart and other pet-friendly places: Take him there, keep an
eye on him for behavior that indicates he's looking for a place to pee
or poop, and then get him outside quickly--and praise him profusely
when he does his business outside. He'll get the idea fairly quickly.

A certain fuzzy dog says that if some other dog has gone somewhere, it's
fair game. This goes for PetsMart.

One of the reasons Khan stayed in rescue for as long as he did (4 months) is
because his housetraining status was unknown. He would mark vertical
surfaces at PetsMart where the adoption day was held, and the general
assumption was that he wasn't housetrained.

It turned out to be easy enough to remind him that marking in the house,
especially on DH's fancy stereo system is not allowed. A little harder to
convince him of it when at pet stores, but with some diligence (watch for
signs he's going to lift, interrupt and redirect), he no longer marks there.

The most embarassing thing that ever happened to me was when I took him to a
home visit with me. To my utter horror, he hiked on these nice people's
lovely book case. Turned out, they had watched a friend's unreliably
housetrained dog a month back, and that was one of his favorite marking
spots. I knew they would be fine for just about any dog when their comment
to his marking was that they must've not done a good job on cleaning up
after the previous dog.

Yep, I guarantee EVERY vertical surface, corner and stack in Petsmart
has been previously annointed. I watch my female marker like a hawk
in such stores and her interest tells me exactly where there has been
a previous mark. And that is everywhere.

If the dog squated and left a puddle, I'm thinking nerves. Those
stores are pretty overwhelming. If he hiked a leg on something -- he
was covering an earlier mark.

Mercy! ;^) PetSmart knows that dogs pee in there...because dogs smell
the urine of other dogs that have peed there. They even supply paper
towels at the ends of every other aisle for the purpose of cleaning up
after your dog who is jest doin' what comes naturally because other
dogs have. When he smells what they have done he figures it's OK for
him to do it too. YOur good Ozzie IS housetrained-PetSmart just isn't
a house. ;^)

If your problem is a housebreaking issue then crate training your
Spaniel is the best option. If you start a good house training
schedule using a crate with a 3 year old dog it should only take a few
weeks to achieve the desired result. This schedule should work well
for you http://www.dog-obedience-training-re...-training.html

Good luck with it.

The local PetSmart is so well marked that I will not purchase anything stored on the bottom shelf. No surprise that your dog marked it, but it makes a great place to work on training pups not to pee no matter how great the temptation. I have a four-month-old Cane Corso, Zita, who will be ready for a visit to their toy aisle in a month or so.
