My friend Helene, who originally rescued Muttley and his pack of three
other dogs, has found two more dogs in one of the poor areas of urban Baltimore, and they are in need of assistance. The male, named "Rambo", is about Muttley's size, and he has mated with a female who produced a litter of eight pups. Rambo is tentatively "owned" by someone Helene knows, and she helps by providing bags of dog food. But she cannot physically rescue the dogs and take them to a shelter, and she does not have the funds to get them neutered to avoid more unwanted puppies in the future. Helene has asked me to see if anyone can send just a dollar or two toward the cost of taking care of these dogs' veterinary care. I think the dogs are well enough cared for otherwise, as in having reasonable human companionship, but the people do not have the financial resources for vet bills. If anyone would care to contribute, via PayPal or other means, please contact her at hroehmie at smart dog net, or you can contact me or post suggestions. I told her she might try http://www.alleyanimals.org/. However, I think they mostly deal with feeding feral cats, and fostering dogs for adoption. I'll try to get some photos of the dogs so you can get a better feel for their environs and nature. Paul and Muttley |

Take a look at this page: http://www.animalrescueinc.org/aboutus_whoweare.asp The last paragraph: "Animal Rescue also promotes spay/neuter programs (we also run our own low cost program for those in need), and operates a Crisis Intervention Program which keeps the human/animal bond intact by providing assistance to the elderly, sick, and the infirm." flick 100785 |

Rescue's a bitch. You can't just have warm fuzzies, you have to actually be responsible about it. Placing safe animals safely and all of that. She may contact Recycled Love and see if they can help with evaluation, s/n, and placement. -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

Sending those puppy to new homes, intact, isn't a good rescue policy either. I would hope the puppies were or will be properly cared for, which would certainly include s/n. The shelters and rescues are so full, they would probably not be accepted, and most likely would be euthanized. That might be the only viable option, unfortunately. My information for this situation is second-hand, from a woman who has a soft spot in her heart for all animals (including wild foxes she feeds on her porch), and a softer spot in her head for getting so involved in their rescue, while lacking the physical means to carry through on her intents without help from suckers like me. I'll get more information as this progresses. You are right that much of rescue sucks, but the occasional successes make the effort worthwhile. I just hope these dogs can get the s/n and minimal vet care they need, and that they may have a decent life with their present "owners", rather than adding to the burden of overloaded shelters and rescues.
