Most of our supplements now come from China.

Growing your own fruits and vegetables: GMO crops are "escaping" to
contaminate the non-GMO crops. In the near future it may be near
impossible to obtain non GMO seeds.

We are headed toward Soilent Green.

Granted, this person is obviously an idiot, but I wonder if
this assertion is even true. I don't know that it's not but
I don't know that it is, either, and the actual numbers
regarding trade often surprise people (Mastercard
"priceless" moment: a guest on Bill O'Reilly says "Canada is
our largest trading partner" and O'Reilly says "No, it's
not." The guest says "Yes, it is." "O'Reilly says "No,
it's not." Ad nauseum).

So, is this assertion something you think, or is it
something you know?

He may have gotten the assertion he
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...042201163.html
or
http://preview.tinyurl.com/3accpe

"Currently, most of the world's vitamins are manufactured in
China. Unable to compete, the last U.S. plant making vitamin C
closed a year ago. One of Europe's largest citric acid plants
shut last winter, and only one vitamin C manufacturer operates in
the West. Given China's cheap labor, artificially low prices and
the unfair competitive climate it has foisted on the industry,
few Western producers of food ingredients can survive much longer."

A caveat - "The writer was president of NutraSweet Kelco Co. from
1994 to 1997. He is a management consultant to many large food
ingredient companies." There may be some money here to follow...

Still, whether you believe this author or not, it's not an
allegation that I would dismiss lightly, in view of what's turned
up as a result of the pet food debacle.

I'm not dumb enough to dismiss someone because he's got a
financial interest in an area - he's either right or he's
wrong. But I think the article you reference answers a
different question (about the competitiveness of US
nutriceuticals in international markets), which obviously
can be affected by US manufacturing costs but also things
like energy costs, interest rates, and exchange rates. It's
not unrelated to the question of where most of our dietary
supplements come from (ask the steel industry) but it
doesn't really answer the question.
