Default Dogs and postal carriers

I suppose this has been talked about but I can't find any relevant
hits when I do a search of this ng. What is it with dogs and their
going crazy when they encounter postal employees or other delivery
people?

The uniformed man comes up to the property.
Dog gives slight woof.
Man goes away.
Dog thinks, wow, I am one scary dog. Look at the way that man left the
minute I told him off.
Man returns.
Dog gives quiet woof-woof.
Man goes away.
Dog thinks, my opponent has gotten greater, but I scared him off again.
Man returns.
Dog gives woof-woof-wuffety-WOOF.
Man goes away.
Dog thinks, he doesn't realize what he's up against, but I'll keep him
off my property no matter what it takes.
Man returns.
Dog gives woof-woof-wuffety-WOOF with a barkety, bark, bark, BARK.
Man goes away.
Dog thinks, we're at war, but I'll show him; I'm winning.
Man returns.
With a growl, and a woof, a bark, and snoof, Dog fights for all that is
good and true, defends his territory, gathers his resources and chases
foul intruder from the premises.
Man goes away.
