If you are using commercial dog food, your dog could be dying a slow
death. Most people refuse to aknowledge the fact that the commercial dog food is garbage. It contains tons of additives that are proven to cause cancer and other horrible things. If you keep feeding your dog this commercial dog food your shaving up to 8 years off your dogs life. I have a blog dedicated to saving dogs from this horrible scam. Go ahead and check it out. http://loveyourpooch.blogspot.com/ |

Go ahead and check it out. http://loveyourpooch.blogspot.com/ Unfortunately, all those things listed on your blog also apply to human food, so if you just give them human food, you run the same risks. Also, there have been more human food recalls than pet foods. E- coli outbreaks are common. I have no doubts that you can mix a very good dog food, but I also think the commercial dog foods are fine. In fact, one is almost as good as another, IMO, since there is a lot of hype built into selling dog food. My dog is thriving. I add a raw egg to her kibble at each feeding. The kibble is a mixture of Walmart cheap dogfood, Purina puppy chow and other food I get as free samples from the pet store and vet's office. One trick I use to try and avoid the contaminated dog food problem is to buy my dog food way ahead of time. It is good for many months, so I always buy it at least 3 months before I plan to use it. That way if there is a problem, I should know about it ahead of time. dkw |

Well, the rest of us can just talk about the pros and cons of mixing your own dog food. Do you like my idea of buying the food ahead of time? It works for human food too. Well, canned food anyway. In fact I had two jars of the peanut butter (unopened) that was recalled last year. Orange juice or spinach wouldn't work of course cause you have to consume them much faster. Amazing that so many of the dog food companies used the ingredient from the same source. The peanut butter recall showed the same thing. Both Peter Pan (at a much higher price) and the Walmart brand cheap stuff were made in the same factory. Since the ingredients are item for item the same, you can assume the quality is also the same...in this case poor, however. dkw |

Why? -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community Why is it amazing or why did they use it from the same source? I think it is amazing that all those brands with their claims of superior this or that would not also make their own ingredients in their own processing plants. I am trying to make a point that often the cheap brands are better buys cause they are in fact the same thing found in another box that sells for a higher price. I know this isn't always the case. Hershey's makes chocolate for lots of companies for example and Kellogs makes cereal for lots of different brands of corn flakes. dkw |

Do you like my idea of buying the food ahead of time? Kibble gets stale and rancid if it's not consumed in a timely manner. Amazing that so many of the dog food companies used the ingredient from the same source. The peanut butter recall showed the same thing. Both Peter Pan (at a much higher price) and the Walmart brand cheap stuff were made in the same factory. Um, Peter Pan *is* cheap peanut butter. It's full of corn syrup and hydrogenated oil. Ugh. Anyway, for whatever reason, I've never had any of the foods I eat recalled. That doesn't mean it couldn't happen, but I'd like to think that my shopping habits make it less likely. -- Shelly http://cat-sidh.net (the Mothership) http://esther.cat-sidh.net (Letters to Esther) |

Consider for a moment that most folks do not eat the same thing every day, even though their meals are made in the same kitchen, by the same hands, with the same basic ingredients, day after day after day after day. -- Shelly http://cat-sidh.net (the Mothership) http://esther.cat-sidh.net (Letters to Esther) |
