I don't see no steeenkin' Lesson #1C!

I don't even see no steenkin' Lesson #1B!

I'm not even sure that there was ever a Lesson #1A!

So many lessons.

So little training goin' on.

Well, I was referring to the length of time it would take for him to
get to a lesson #1C... not sure if you caught that or not.

Ah.

Then at the current trajectory, you and I will probably both be taking
dirt naps when he gets around to Lesson #1C.

Hi..

We have adopted a dog (1 yr old).. and this is our first dog..

Both me and my wife work and our work place is not close to home.. We
were thinking of leaving the dog in the crate... we will be out of
home for around 11 hrs.. Would you recommend leaving the dog in the
first week itself for that long??

The dog is currently in the animal shelter.. We thought, it should be
ok.. what do you all think.. I am reading some books and articles and
i am now worried..

any help you all can provide will be great.. thanks a bunch in
advance..

help the newbiee here!!

- GK.

I'm actually surprised that an animal shelter will leave a dog go to a
home that is not quite suitable.
If you are away for 11 hours, why are you getting a dog?

Are you willing to walk and run it for an hour in the morning, and
another hour when you get home?
Have you thought of a dog walker to walk your dog during the day? Have
you thought of doggie day care if there is one in your neighbourhood.

Eleven hours !! sheese... would you like to be cagged that long? Why
don't you make a run for it out in the back... at least !!

I am adopting a lab mix.. she is like 30 lbs.. we believe she is a mix
of lab and chow...

Crating the dog is a good idea, especially with a lab mix at that age.
They are really mouthy even after housebroken and you have to be careful
they don't chew on something that could hurt them. You also want to be
sure that the dog doesn't have the chance to destroy valuable stuff in
your house before learning what is off limits. He can't learn that when
you aren't there to tell him what is okay and what is not, so better to
crate him than to blame him and have him pick up bad habits.

The problem is that 11 hours is not only too long to go without a potty
break, but too long for an active puppy to be confined in a small area.
If you can find a dog sitter or a neighbor who can stop in to take the
dog out to pee and run around for a while, you'll both be much happier.
If you really can't do anything about that long a stretch in the crate,
look into getting an older dog that can hold it longer and is not as
active. A less active breed would also do better. Rescues often have
dogs that are already housebroken and trained to behave in the house
while you are gone. My dogs have the run of the house while we are gone,
so it isn't as big a deal if work runs late than if they were crated.
They would not have been able to do that at the state your dog will be
in, though.
