Default Finger Pointing

Two of my dogs understand that I'm pointing at something "over there"
when I point my finger. Both dogs are eight years old. One is a
dachshund, one is a mix (of what I don't know). Both are female. I've
had them since they were puppies. When I point they look in the
direction I'm pointing, not at the tip of my finger.

Do any of you have dogs that do this?

Sure. I think pretty much every dog I've ever lived with. Even
Princess, The Beagle from Hell, would look where you pointed.

When you live in intimate proximity with another species you're bound to
pick up a certain amount of body language. And I bet you usually
augment the human gesture of pointing with the canine version, an
exagerated stare.

Have you ever tried imitating a canine pant-laugh? It's a sort of
hollow, breathy sound. Imagine you've just taken a bite of something
that is much too hot but you don't dare spit it out. I think it's
believed to be an invitation to play and sure enough, my dogs grab the
first toy they can find and come running if you pant/laugh at them.

Shelly,
I had to laugh about the foot pointing. I do the same thing and my
dogs look where my foot is pointing. Yes, it is usually at food.
The reason I have to use my foot is because my hands are usually full
with my food.

Mr President, Please free Leonard Peltier.

You've trained them well!

But if you want your dogs to look at your finger, let them know that
you have a treat in your hand, then start pointing, and they will soon
learn to look at your finger (pseudo treat!)

Nope! I want them to look where I'm pointing.
